My biggest concern with technology in the classroom is student behavior. What do I do if a student is misusing technology? How can I prevent this from happening? What if it becomes a continual problem?

This is a big problem in the classroom, especially with high school students. We have access to a program that shows us exactly what our students are doing on their Chromebooks,and if they are misusing it we can block that site. They then tend to pull out devices,but we take them up and give it back when class is dismissed.

I saw similar issues while working as a long term sub. We used the Go Gardian program on student computers which allowed me to monitor their use an time they opened the computer. I was even able to monitor students computer screens if they were not in class. I was able to send direct messages to them through the program and watch it come up on their screen. The screen shot option was helpful for students who were continually getting on inappropriate sites, and for me to show their parents. Students who were continuous issues with misuse were reported to the office, and administration would often take the device away from the student for a period of time. Most of the time this was enough to redirect their behavior online while in class.

At our school, the technology department has programs implace that tracks student internet use and can block them from visiting unapproved sites. We also have them keep their phones put away during class time. I walk around and monitor the students while they are working to make sure they are not looking at something they are not supposed to.

In my classes when students are paying more attention to their phones or devices rather than the topic at hand I will ask them a question that is pertinent to the discussion. If they do not know the answer I will have them look it up on their device. Most of the time this will reengage them.

My husband is a high school teacher and has good experiences with this. At the beginning of the year he explains the consequences to using a cell phone during class. He enforces the rule when he has to and because of that he really has no issue with it.

This is also one of my biggest concerns as well. With the majority of the students' work being on their Chromebooks, making sure to walk around the class is important. There is a program that allows us to see how much time the students are spending on the applications they are supposed to be on but doesn't show what they are doing outside of that. If it becomes a continual problem I would just sit the student closer to me.

Technology is all around us. I am surprised that it is even still a law that being on your phone in the presence of children is considered neglect...this is the case at least for birth - pre-k, not sure about K-12th. But, so much is accessible via our phones. So, to have the expectation of students not being on phones at school is also part of "old school" days. I know schools still have this in their handbooks but it is not enforced unless it becomes a problem. As humans, we want what we cannot have. It is my experience to let quick usage in class slide. Harping on the devices being present causes more negative attention and they want to use it even more just because they aren't supposed to. In some instances, students are able to use their device to access information that should be accessible via their chromebook but the district internet is down. Having access to their phone/personal internet can prove to be beneficial. Of course, if they are being disruptive, completely not paying attention or you know they are inappropriate sites, I would take it up and leave it at the desk until the end of the period. Depending on just how bad the situation is, you could keep it til the end of the day. A local school has a policy of submitting it to the principal. At the end of the day they can get it from the principal, if it is their first offense for the quarter. Otherwise, a parent has to pick it up from the principal.

I think enforcing this at the beginning of the year is very important so students know they are not able to be on them during class.

I believe that student behavior is a very valid concern to have in regards to technology in the classroom. This is something that I am also somewhat concerned with since I have not had to deal with it yet.

This would be my biggest concern as well. I would gradually make walks around the room as well enforcing rules at the beginning of the year. If the problem continues, simply sit the student down and speak to them and help them understand that this is a learning environment.

Using technology should be a privilege in the classroom under certain circumstances. If students are misusing technology, then they lose the privilege to use it during the appropriate times such as down time in class. Phones are one of the biggest concerns, and I think that having a phone locker seems like it would work well. And schools have options to have ad blockers, and also the wifi can block certain websites if computers become an issue. It might be something that needs to be discuses with an administrator to understand all of the tools you have access to.

Throughout grade school my school district had in place technology that would block websites that students should not be visiting. If a student attempted to reach one of these sites it would flag it and report it to the technology center. They did this so that they could warn the students to not try to visit those sites again or there would be consequences. If this is not available for your school district, if you see a child misusing technology I would just take their game privileges for the week or day. If it becomes an every day issue I would take it to the principal and let them handle it in a different way.

While I don't yet have a classroom of my own. We do utilize technology in many ways in the Head Start and Early Head Start Classrooms as a supplemental learning tool for young children. My main concern with using technology in my own classroom in the future would have to be students giving more attention to their devices than the lesson.

I agree that the aspect of technology taking over the lesson and focus could be something that needs to be planned around. Tie in some group discussions or Brain Breaks between technology assignments to keep the focus on the lesson and not simply technology.

Sometimes we get stuck using too much technology in the classroom and it actually hurts our students. I think it's important to take a day every now and then and go outside and get some fresh air.

I think it's going to be a learning curve for teachers and parents. The school I am at refuses to use it. This isn't good, in the long run they are causing issues not allowing it. On the other hand, it's not to replace actual books. As an English Teacher I have a huge issue with only reading online. There isn't anything wrong with utilizing technology as a resource, but it can't be the only way you teach. This is just my opinion, but I am taking a class in the summer, so I don't have to commute. Realizing that's exactly what I am doing.

I will use what my previous teachers have taught me. Warnings, restrictions, then office referrals. In college it is a little bit different, you are an adult who can manage your own time; meaning if you decide to play on your computer besides researching for your paper, that is on you. In High school, you are responsible for these kids' education. They come to your class to learn; you are responsible to make sure that these kids are on task when they are supposed to be. They are really trying to get you prepared for college by assigning you work that requires thinking and researching.

If a student is misbehaving because of technology, try to re-engage the student. Ask them a question about the topic, ask them to show the class what they are doing on their computer. Sometimes embarrassment is the best way to get their attention again.

Technology in the classroom will only be as dangerous as the teacher allows. Meaning, the teacher must always be in control and aware of what is being done with the technology.

what are good ways to allow younger students such as elementary students, to use technology without them getting distracted or misusing it? A lot of the time students in younger grades will get off task and start playing games on computers which is a good way to stop this problem.

Technology in the classroom can be very helpful, especially when students need accommodations. It gives teachers access to things they would otherwise not have access to and even allows us to teach about jobs using technology.

I think that having technology is something of the future and present and we just need to keep evolving because it is not going anywhere. I think that it is a very good source of efficiency and that we need to learn how to maximize that as we move further into the era of technology.

I think having technology in the classroom is a good things but also there are concerns too it too. One of the concern is students get so carried away by the technology they own and get to doing everything else besides work. So, Yes I think there are concerns us and in coming teachers that we have to be aware of.
