Simon Faulkner

- A project on Black Lives Matter (BLM) and images on Twitter, working with Farida Vis under the aegis of the Visual Social Media Lab. This was funded through an internal application to the Faculty Internationalisation budget. It involved working with colleagues from the Media Department at New York University as well as Patrick Williams from MMU Sociology. As the work developed we were also joined by people from Columbia University. The research involved two trips by the MMU team to NYC in November 2019 and January 2020 during which were developed coding methods to analyse a corpus of Twitter images relating BLM. The work was to be continued through the Americans coming to MMU in March 2020, with a group of students to participate in a workshop and do further analysis, but this visit never happened because of COVID-19. The project was then in hiatus until 2021 when we returned to analysing the Twitter images. We have publication plans coming out of this work that we will pursue, that will involve working again with the US collaborators.

- A project funded by the Canadian Heritage Fund on Visual Literacy and Mis/Dis-Information in Canadian Schools. This is a collaboration between myself and Farida Vis (as the directors of the Visual Social Media Lab), Karen Pashby from MMU Education, the Canadian NGO CIVIX, and colleagues in Education at the University of Alberta. The project comes out of prior work with CIVIX primarily undertaken by Farida and is focussed assessing the usefulness of a framework for analysing visual mis/disinformation developed in 2019 by the Visual Social Media Lab and CIVIX, that was piloted with a large number of Canadian teachers, a significant number of whom then used the framework in their teaching. The funding for this project ended in September 2021, but we are still working on further teaching materials developed through the work and on publications.
