If the species were to go extinct ecosystems would lose a vital part as Gray Whales as bottom-feeders create gigantic mud plumes that "re-suspend large volumes of nutrients" helping to provide for the ecosystem on the seafloor. Without this it would be harder for seabirds and other organisms without crustaceans that rely on those nutrients.
