This activity is great for a whole class read aloud or for families to read aloud together at home. Modeling read aloud is a benefit for both teachers and students because it sets the expectations, and shows students how they should be reading, using correct speed, inflection in their voice, and when to pause at commas and other punctuation.

Staake, J.
Fluency and Punctuation Poster

Punctuation is so important when it comes to reading fluently. With this strategy, a poster is hung in the classroom as a reminder to students what each type of punctuation mark looks like, and what the type of inflection in their voice. The poster goes on to include quotation marks which is a great way for students to read different voices for different characters. This poster is beneficial for teachers, as the reminder will always be hanging in the classroom for reference. The students will benefit from this strategy by always having that reference in a nearby spot for easy access. It is beneficial for silent reading and whole class read aloud moments.

Staake, J.

Post a sight word bank around your classroom with groupings of words that begin with the same letter, or even have the same rhyming sounds. This is beneficial for students to have a constant visual of high frequency words in their line of vision throughout the day. It is also beneficial for teachers to use these high frequency words and point them out as well. Activities for practice, such as writing them in shaving cream, or sand will include multi-sensory activities as well.

Waterford.org. (2022).

The strategy of reading and then rereading is beneficial for students to recognize words as they read, and it is great for students' comprehension. This strategy can be done with the teacher collecting data, or independently. With this strategy, students can read with different types of voices for the characters which will practice inflection and tone of voice.

Staake, J.
