Due to

Secularisation getting married at a young age is no longer the norm. In addition to this, more young people are choosing to reman single and childless. These people may prefer a larger disposable income and financial freedom to having to spend 16+ years raising a child. This stems from the post modernist view point on individualism. Klinenberg in particular talked about how living independently is seen by many young people as an achievement. They believe that it is something to be proud of and enjoy having a larger disposable income. Because of religion becoming less important in todays society, we no longer value marriage as highly leading to a decline in the typical nuclear family making many feel less secure about having children.

Changing expectations for women/Financial Independence

Due to expanding employment rights for women, more women are choosing to focus on their careers. Previously, women had limited employment rights and opportunities, and were paid very little, which meant they sought marriage for financial support. Now women are able to enter employment easily, so they have increased financial independence and can now support themselves. This means there is a rise in young female adults living alone, and choosing not to rush into marriages, or marry at all. This view can be supported by post-modernists writers such as Stacey, who writes that due to greater choice, women can shape their family arrangements to meet their own needs, and many are rejecting the traditional housewife-mother role, and choosing to end relationships if they are unhappy, to return to singlehood.

According to ONS, 38.4% of adults in the UK in 2018 were single. It is also estimated that over half of single people in the UK are aged between 16-64, and the majority are male. Furthermore, Mintel's reported that when interviewed, 61% of women are happy being single, as are 49% of men, again denoting an increase as many factors contribute to singlehood becoming more popular.

Singlehood has risen because of the rise of independence of people. People have chosen their individual needs over traditional family ways of life. Klinenberg (2012) points out that living alone is seen as a success among younger people. As community pressure may have kept unsatisfactory marriages together now people are pressured to leave unhappy relationships. Research has shown that people who never marry are just as happy as those who do.

Postmodernists believe that the increase in singlehood is a positive thing as it corresponds to more choice and freedom in our society, stemming from how the stigmas for getting divorced, living alone by choice, and other methods of singlehood are disappearing, and marriage has become less of a focal point in our society. Feminists also believe it is positive as it means that women are able to live independently outside of a relationship with a male dominant, so the patriarchal elements of our society are becoming less prominent.

Due to the large elderly population population many elderly people are losing their partners this has lead to a dramatic spike in people trapped in singlehood. Statistics show that the majority of people living alone are men over 60. This just shows the dramatic impact of a partners death at an old age. In away this reflects on how western society views elderly people. Many adults would rather let a parents live alone than have the burden of taking care of them. In addition to this, due to larger life expectancy's by the time many elderly people need care from their children their children may be too old them selves to take care of their parents. Due to the fact that some kids don't have the capacity to take care of their parents (and the fact that many don't want to) singlehood among the elderly has increased dramatically.
