Students can use one dry-erase whiteboard and one eraser. Students will be asked to clear the whiteboard after each testing session.

Student Teaching Placement Guidelines and Requirements

I am currently in my job, which I have been in for over 15 years. I am facing burnout there and wanted a change of career. I also wanted to find professional satisfaction, such as obtaining a degree, and that degree actually being used and meaning something in my career, with opportunities for advancement. This was my primary motivation. As I started my degree program and started interacting with the course material and learning new concepts, my desire to teach continued to grow. I began developing ideas from the content and strategies I learned that I wanted to implement in my classroom one day. When I started, I set a goal that I wanted to be teaching by August of 2026. This was also a primary driving force that kept me on track and motivated me. 

Strategies

• Do not immediately take the PA for classes with an OA. I waited until after studying the course material to gauge how well I retained the information. 

• Break down classes into sections per day. I have a calendar, and I would plan out my week with the goal of completing at least one class. I would break the class down into sections per day. This made it manageable and gave a feeling of accomplishment when I met the goals I set for myself. If I felt up to it, I always allowed myself room to complete more work. I did the same thing with tasks.

• OA strategy - Do not procrastinate when taking an OA. If you know the material, you know the material. I have found waiting caused me more undue stress, and it's better to take it and get it over with than think on it for days, wondering if you are ready.

• PA - Read through the rubric first. I always double-check my work against the rubric to ensure everything is included. This has helped tremendously because I have not had too many revisions. I would go through the rubric and check off the requirements once I found them in my task. I also let someone else read over the rubric and grade my work for me by the rubric to see if they caught anything I missed.

• Last but not least - Ride the wave - this means keep getting wins. Celebrate the small steps because they will lead to bigger wins. For example, I just recently took my final OA for my degree. This was huge and a huge burden off me. It started with little steps that led to bigger wins.  

My weekly planner helped me see where I could fit in study time. Luckily, I was still on summer break the first week and could devote a lot of time to my classes right away.

Planning with my spouse was key — we’re a team, and I needed their support to avoid conflicts around study time. Family always comes first, so I study around my kids’ schedules.

• I wake up every morning at 4:15 AM (sometimes gym, sometimes study).

• Study time is 2 hours before the kids wake up.

• Monday–Thursday evenings 8–10:30 PM are for schoolwork.

• Friday nights are family time only.

• I sleep in on weekends to avoid burnout, but Saturday evening is sometimes study time.

• Sundays are backup days — if I miss studying during the week, I catch up. If I’m on track, Sunday is for relaxing!

I keep short-term goals to stay motivated — like finishing a course and then enjoying a 1-2 day break or treating myself to something nice.

My success comes down to sticking to my schedule and not giving in to excuses. I’m lucky to have my team here at WGU encouraging me. A strong support system is a must!

I also make sure to give myself mental health breaks so I don’t burn out.
