Therefore, whenever I see scientific feats like this, I'm reminded of how rigorous the process of scientific scholarship must be in order for humans like us to fly out into the deep space and discover the world beyond us. The Tuskegee Airmen were African American pilots that fought in WW2. I chose this artifact as the "citizenship" pillar because of how these men played a much bigger role than just a US soldier. Not only were they helpful in the fight against the Axis powers, but they were helpful in fighting the future fight for civil rights. Members of the Tuskegee Airmen participated in non-violent protests to desegregate the military, and it worked. This to me perfectly represents "citizenship": these men, while breaking the "law", were doing it because they recognized the unmorality of it and knew it had to be changed in order for the American military, but also all of American society, to integrate and become even better. Cesar Chaves was a Mexican-American labour leader who fought on behalf of farm workers, advocating for better wages and working conditions. I chose this artifact for the "leadership" pillar because of how as a leader, Chavez inspired and brought together people to work towards a collective goal. Chavez, the founder and leader of the National Farm Workers Association, worked with other union groups to boycott against grapes. His leadership, along with personal sacrifice of food strikes, helped him win important victories for his people. That's what leaders do: bring people together to change something collectively for the greater good. The file is meant to inspire these people to come together so they can collectively fight for better lives and civil rights within the US. I chose this artifact for the "Community Building within a Diverse Society" pillar because this artifact does exactly that. It's trying to build a community of different people with different cultures and lives together for a collective purpose. All three are similar in that they both are deprived of their civil rights and decent standards of living, so by coming together they can possibly have enough people and power to help achieve their goals. Since many men, and therefore husbands, volunteered to fight the war, women were encouraged to enter arms-manufacturing jobs. This was to help produce many weapons and other war materials needed to support the war effort. I picked this artifact for the "Community Service Learning" pillar. Even though woman before WW2 weren't accustomed to having jobs outside the household, many took up the role and performed. This poster is a visual representation of a community of women volunteering to leave the household and providing service for the better of American war efforts.
