Many of the cities in Europe are descendants of medieval and pre industrial cities. These cities grew very slowly for centuries with little planning. Which resulted into a commercial and residential land used with narrow and winding streets. Later urban renovations cut trough areas to produce elegant and wide boulevards with high quality housing and shops. Often former palace grounds have been transformed into large urban parks. European suburbs are likely to have higher percentage of taller buildings.

Large cities were rare in most of Africa until the 19th century when Europeans colonized the continent. But the urban areas recently have grown rapidly. The growth of informal settlements often results from the rapid influx of migrants who simply reside where they can find space (squatter settlements)

Cities shaped by the spread of Islam are common in the Middle East, North Africa, parts of Spain and East Africa and a few locations in Southeast asia. The principal mosque in the center of an Islamic city is usually surrounded by a complex structure to serve the public, such as schools for children and soup kitchens for the poor. Many cities were built with a fort designed to protect the city with its related palace and barracks for soldiers. MAjor roads run from the Gate to the center and along these roads are traditional outdoor bazaars called suqs.
