The novel challenges the ideals of colonization and the idea that colonizers brought 'civilization, order and education' with them, and that those colonized were uneducated savages. In the story, we see that it is the English boys who turned into savages, who threw away reason and forgot their civilised background as they struggled to survive on the island. There are many points to consider in their behaviour, including fear of the unknown, selfishness and jealousy, which are all the darker and more sinister part of human nature. Additionally, the fact that the characters are all children aged six to twelve years old made the story and the actions (and violence) carried out by them more horrific. Through the novel, it could clearly be seen that its author, Golding, has very little faith left in the good side of human nature, and he thought that the World Wars and the impending Cold War as well as the threat of nuclear weapons clearly signified the abominable savages the so-called civilized part of the world had become, and how death and destruction was the only outcome.
