<description>Before beginning her career as an obstetrician and gynecologist (OB/GYN), Shawanda Renee Obey, MD, graduated with a bachelor of science in microbiology from Louisiana State University. While pursuing her degree, she gained admittance to microbiology and premedical honor societies and was active on campus as a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Following completion of her undergraduate studies, Shawanda Renee Obey, MD, accepted a role as a clinical influenza research technologist with the Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Obey ultimately spent nearly three years at Baylor before resuming her education at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. There, she went on to complete her doctor of medicine. She subsequently relocated to Detroit, where she undertook an obstetrics and gynecology residency at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. Excelling in her postgraduate training, she garnered distinction as chief resident.

Shawanda Renee Obey, MD, later established and spent nearly a decade operating a solo obstetrics and gynecology practice in Plano, Texas. She has since moved to the greater Los Angeles area, where she has shifted her focus to caring for women in hospital and community health settings. Today, she pursues these parallel career paths as an obstetric hospitalist at local medical centers and as a supervising OB/GYN physician at the nonprofit Northeast Valley Health Corporation.
