The withdrawal of access to welfare and social services, including housing, welfare payments or health services, all form a part of this system of structural violence which leads to increasing levels of harm. The report concludes that the relocation took place in a successful and child-sensitive manner, which can help inspire other countries as well as provide valuable lessons learned for further improvements in future relocation activities.

This is tragic and likely an underestimation. By October 2022, nearly one-third of the population was displaced and more than 7.6 million refugees from Ukraine were recorded across Europe. Thousands of children and families are still being forced to flee, while violence and fighting make it hard to access essential healthcare and education.

Save the Children research with more than 1,000 children and caregivers in eight European countries, shows that children who have left Ukraine face significant challenges adjusting to their new environment. They report higher levels of anxiety and unhappiness than before, and a worryingly high proportion do not plan to enrol in or attend school. These findings are based on a survey and focus group discussions with children and their caregivers carried out in Finland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania and Sweden in July and August 2022.

The article studies the frequency of contacts in first language and in German, as proxies for the bonding and bridging social capital. Marital  status,  childlessness  and  family  work  were  identified  as  important  factors:  frequency  of  contact  substantially  varied by gender and family context.

Of all surveyed groups, married childless women and married men with children had the  least  contacts  in  both  languages.

Although  an unequal distribution of childcare may limit women's time resources, we observed  a  positive association  between  motherhood  and frequency of contact in German.

Atti n. 255/CSR of 20/12/12 /2012) had provided for the compulsory registration of foreign minors with the National Health Service regardless of their residence permit, without however identifying specific modalities and procedures at the national level regarding registration.

Refugee women from the Near and Middle East face specific challenges when entering the Austrian labour market.
Particularly gender-based factors, including care and reproductive work, exert pressure on these women and constitute major hurdles for successful entry into employment in Austria.

Based on nine qualitative interviews with refugee women who swiftly gained entry to the labour market as well as ten qualitative interviews with experts from public and private support organisations, we investigate refugee women’s social and cultural capital as well as the individual agencies that foster paths into the labour market.
We introduce the concept of enablement as the process of gathering the preconditions for overcoming the challenges that arise on that path.

Our first contribution is to show that economic integration has an impact on social integration for low- and medium-educated refugees only. Furthermore, language proficiency, having a child in Germany, refugee accommodation, and the number of acquaintances from other countries have a positive impact on social integration, while age has the opposite effect.

Our second main result is that social integration affects the intention to stay in Germany, whereas economic integration does not. Moreover, education, English proficiency, and the number of daughters in Germany have a negative impact on the intention to stay.

Many countries have even seen some 'backsliding', specifically in the areas of residency, housing and social security, although there has been slight progress in the areas of citizenship, collaboration, family reunification, language learning, and social orientation.
  • Compared with present legal provisions on residence and equal access, all countries do worse when it comes to active policies supporting integration, cross-sectoral coordination, and government support for civil society and local authorities.
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, countries with more inclusive integration policy frameworks had more favourable outcomes in terms of minimising the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak upon refugees.

As European Bar associations are members of the HELP Network and there is a sound basis of HELP tutors (many of them also experts on asylum/migration), HELP could rapidly respond via tailored legal support – that can evolve as we go through all stages of conflict, peace-building and post-conflict.

    Thus, as of 1 March 2022, virtual Asylum/Migration HELP e-Desks were set up, managed by HELP tutors and legal experts to support lawyers assisting refugees from Ukraine in four EU neighbouring countries (Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland) with EU financial support, as well as in Moldova, with Council of Europe's own funding.
