This video shows clear images of Hoovervilles set up all over big cities. It also goes into detailing how they came to be, what they mean, and the quality of life for the inhabitants. Many of the people living in these shanty towns were not used to living in these conditions where they were consistently without food or access to clean water. The public at first viewed the Hoover-dwellers as dirty and criminal but became more and more empathetic as the Depression wore on.

These Hooverville encampments set up in Seattle and Tacoma were some of the largest in the US. Covering nine acres of public land, the shantytowns
housed a population of up to 1,200. The towns were comprised almost entirely of men and it was noted that people of all different ethnic backgrounds "intermingled", which was a rare occurrence at that time.

This painting of Seattle’s Hooverville, by Ronald Ginther, depicted one of the largest homeless settlements in the nation. Many artists and media painted and described Hoovervilles and their inhabitants as dirty, criminal, and exotic. However, they failed to give credit to the craftiness and organization of these people who had built these towns and formed mini governments to manage them

This song, We’d Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover, from Annie the musical is set in a shanty town. It is about Hooverville inhabitants regretting their decision to elect Hoover and talking about their lives before the depression. They are also making fun of Hoover and ridiculing his campaign idea of “a chicken in every person’s pot”. This scene helps highlight the anger and blame America felt towards Hoover.

This political cartoon is placing the blame of the great depression on President Herbert Hoover. The cartoon shows two men reading a newspaper article on one of Hoover's speeches. It is making fun of the fact that the president doesn't acknowledge that there are slums that are being named after him and he is doing nothing to help.

This is an image of a shanty home at Central Park that has been destroyed by the police. At the beginning of the Depression, people had very little sympathy for the homeless and tried to get rid of these settlements. The Hoovervilles in Central Park were burned down twice by the police but were quickly rebuilt.

Even though there are children living in this shack, most settlements had requirements against women and children living in the Hoovervilles as per the cities' sanitation rules.

This was not the biggest town, but the skyscrapers provided hope for the inhabitants. The sight told people that one day the Depression would end and things would go back to normal.
