In Japan, It is called the Japanese New Year, it is an annual festival with its own customs. Japanese eat a selections of dishes during the New year celebration called osechi. Some are sweet or dried. Some foods in certain areas are banned on new years. At midnight on december 31 buddhist temples ring there bells all over japan 108 times. The japanese hads another tradition about sending new year post cards to friends and family to tell them they are alive and well.
