Of mice and men- before I read

I choose this book because I feel like it is a good option for my first book choice, and I find the summary on the back of the book really interesting. I like the idea of two total opposites working together. I expect this book to be somewhat like an adventure novel, or at least that's what it seems like from the summary. I feel like it will .be about these two friends slowly falling out of friendship, and how that will effect their plan. I feel like it will be easy to read, mostly because I read a lot and I think of myself as a good reader. It's not what I would usually read, I mostly read historical fiction and YA books.

I think that's the focal point of my slides and what makes it stand out. I also kind of had a hard time pinpointing the conflict of this story, but I think I got a good enough hold on it.

During week 8 I finished my 1st book project, which was Of Mice and Men. It was my classical book project and I decided to do slides. The other thing I did was start my choice book, which is To Kill a Mockingbird. I already decided what my project will be for this and have a layout semi-done. The only struggle I had this week was that Mrs.Bach was gone and it was harder to ask her questions about my project.

I have decided to read To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I choose this book because I know a lot of people have liked it and I have seen the movie multiple times. It's one of my favorites so I'm excited to see the differences. I was either considering this book or Dance House for my SD choice book. I expect the book to have a lot of drama and lot of plot twists. The author, Harper Lee, describes her book as a simple love story, but I don't know if I would see it was that. I know some of what happens in this book, like the trial. It is not in a series. I think it will be sort of hard to read, or at least harder than Of Mice and Men. I am really excited to to read this because I usually wouldn't go for a book like this.

I read To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee for my second book. For my project, I did a bingo game.

In the bingo game I included people, quotes, setting, and time periods. I described each character how I saw them, like for example, "Motherly figure to Scout and Jem. She is the cook and maid to the Finch household" would be Calpurnia. For quotes, I picked out some of my favorite ones from the book.

The hardest part of making this was choosing who I wanted to include in this and how I would describe some characters. Jem is a main character, but describing him was hard without giving out who it was exactly.

Includes:

Two bingo sheets

25 different slips of paper describing each bingo square.

How to play:

You need one friend to play against.

One of you will draw the slips of paper and read it aloud. Whatever square goes to with the paper, you need to place a chip.*Not included.

There is a free spot you may cover.

If you don't know who said the quote or who the person is, you don't place to the chip. Both bingo sheets have all the same people and quotes, it just depends who has there's lined up better.

**On the other side of the clues, there is the name of who it goes to. Use this to determine who wins when the first person gets a bingo. It's essentially an answer sheet.**

In 1783, George Washington retired from military life. He was nearly 52. He was only retired for about five years before he became president in 1789. Before he announced his retirement, he said goodbye to all of his officers at Fraunces Tavern in New York City and to his army in Rodley Hill, near Princeton, New Jersey. He then said his goodbyes to Congress in the Old Senate Chamber, where he also returned his Commander-in-Chief commission that he decided in 1775. I'm not sure what this commission exactlywas, but it did say that it was a symbolic gesture. The article didn't clearly state what this was. In the following month, Washington publicly gave his farewell address. It was soulful and full of emotion, driving even George himself to have to still the shaking paper with two hands. John Trumbull later painted this famous scene. Here is a quote from his address that the article provided.

"May ample justice be done them here, and may the choicest of Heaven's favors both here and hereafter attend those, who under the divine auspices have secured innumerable blessings for others: With these Wishes, and this benediction, the Commander in Chief is about to retire from service - The Curtain of seperation will soon be drawn - and the Military Scene to him will be closed for ever."

On November 6th, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the United States. According to the graph in the article, states like California, Oregon, Minnesota, Iowa, New York, etc. voted for him. During this time, America was on the verge of a civil war. Lincoln was the president from the start to the end of the Civil War. It is said he already had his most recognizable feature, his beard, when he entered the White House. This can be seen in what is believed to be his first presidential portrait. I really liked this article but I wish it went more in depth about his run for president and the actual article. Here is one of his most memorable speeches from the article. When looking over this, I found that "stretching" was spelt wrong, which I find quite funny.

"I am loth to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, streching from every battle-field, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."

Ulysses Grant was president, and wanted to be reelected. It was the election of 1872, and the civil war was over. His opponent was Horace Greeley. Greeley was the editor of the New York Tribune, and was very popular and had lots of support. People liked his ideas. He had a famous quote: "Go west, young man, go west". It never tell you in the article why this quote was significant in any way. Horace's newspaper was always against slavery, so he was the choice of people who wanted to expand civil rights. Susan B. Anthony, who was a famous advocate for women's rights, voted for Greeley. The 19th Amendment tha gives women the right to vote, was not yet in place, making this illegal for Anthony to do. The 19th amendment wouldn't be in place for more than 50 years. She was arrested three weeks later, on Thanksgiving Day. She was 52 years old. According to the article, supposedly her vote counted. This wasn't clear though, it just said she was able to vote. This is one of he famous quotes from the article.

"Men, their rights and

nothing more

Women, their rights and

nothing less "

On October 12th, 1940, the Jews that lived in Warsaw received terrifying news. A new living arrangement was announced, forcing all Jews to live in a "Jew Quarter". They learned this on Yom Kipper, which is the holiest day in Judaism. In the following month, the "Jewish Ghetto" was sealed off from the rest of Warsaw. A giant, ten foot wall with barbed wire kept them all inside. The ghetto was one of the first steps of the plan of extermination. The Nazis established a Judenrat, otherwise known as the Jewish Council, to do the Nazi's bidding from inside of the ghetto. It wasn't just Jews from Warsaw who lived here, but people from all over, reaching about 500,00 as an estimated population. Since there was so many people, food was insufficient and young children became homeless. Lack of proper clothes was also an issue. Smuggling quickly became a way of life. People died of starvation. A group of adults tried hard to documented the horrors of everyday life. They placed them into metal boxes and three milk cans. Only two out of three milk cans were ever found.

In this story, Della, our main character, is crying over the fact she doesn't have enough to buy her husband a gift. She sells her most prized possession, her hair, to buy Jim a gift. Della ends up buying Jim a chain for his watch. Jim arrives home, and is quiet and void of emotion. Della is scared of this, because she thinks he'll leave since she's no longer beautiful. Instead, he reassures her and tells her this: "Don't make any mistake, Dell," he said, "about me. I don't think there's anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make like my girl any less. But if you'll unwrap that gift you may see why you had me going" (Henry 208). This part of the story made me really, really afraid. I didn't want Jim to leave Della because of the selfless thing she did for him, so when he said he didn't care it made me so relived. Inside of the gift, is a pair of beautiful ivory combs that Della wanted so badly. The catch is that he sold his watch to buy her a present for her hair, and she sold her hair to buy him something for his watch. They both did something selfless for the love for each other, selling both of there most prized possessions. I wish this would tell us at the end what happened afterwards. If Jim ever got his watch back. What would they do with the gifts that they couldn't use? Did Della sell her combs to get his watch back? At the end of the story, it brings up the magi, and how they are wise men. Anyone who gives a gift is wise.

Mrs. Mallard has heart issues, so the new of death of her husband had to be broken to her softly. Her husband, Brently Mallard, died due to a railroad disaster. She was distraught at first, but then realized she didn't always love him, only sometimes. Mrs.Mallard became excited for the future. She used to hate thinking of a future with her husband, but now that's he's dead she's free. "When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!"" (Chopin 6). As she was leaving the house, the front door open and in walked her husband. Though he was believed to be dead, he was far away from the accident. "When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease—of joy that kills." (Chopin 8). Mrs. Mallard's heart issues were mentioned in the first line, but for me I forgot them right away. I was really confused when she died that I had to go back read it again. Does Mr. Mallard grieve when she dies? Does he feel the same about her as she did about him?

Mamzelle Aurélie possessed a good figure and was never married. She was proposed to when she was 20, and is now 50 but holds no regret about refusing. Later, her nearest but not so near neighbor, Odile, brings her four kids for Aurélie to watch. Odile had to go take care of her sick mother, and her husband was away in Texas. For the beginning, Mamzelle Aurélie did not know how to take care do the kids, neither did she like it much. After about two weeks, she grows accustomed to the kids and begins to enjoy their company. At this time, though, Odile comes back from her trip and takes back her kids. After this exchange, Aurélie goes back into the oddly empty cabin and cries. She feels regret for never getting married or starting a family. "She let her head fall down upon her bended arm, and began to cry. Oh, but she cried! Not softly, as women often do. She cried like a man, with sobs that seemed to tear her very soul." (Chopin 16). Some questions I have after reading this is what happens after the kids leave? Does Mamzelle Aurélie see them again? Do they ever come to visit? Does Aurélie ever get married?

In Mammon and the Archer, old Anthony Rockwell is a rich retired man who believes money can buy anything. His son, Richard, has a crush on a girl but sadly doesn't have the time to ask her out, since she will be leaving tomorrow for Europe. All he has with her is a quick ride to the theater tomorrow night. Aunt Ellen gives Richard his mothers ring that is said to have good luck with love right before he leaves for the theater. "Wear it tonight, nephew," she begged. "Your mother gave it to me. Good luck in love she said it brought. She asked me to give it to you when you found the one you loved." (Henry 193). During the ride, Richard dropped the ring and had to stop the cab to grab it. In this time, a giant blockade formed and they were stuck in middle of traffic. He took this time to propose to her, and she accepted. Richard believed this to be because of the ring. Anthony actually paid a man to hire a bunch of people to block the road, giving his son time with her. This ending was sort of a surprise, because at first I thought it was because of the ring that caused the blockade. Anthony deceives them and secretly planted it, which I suppose is nice in a way but also kind of messed up. Some questions I have after reading is did Anthony ever tell his son what he did? I think if he did, Richard would be very mad at his dad, because of his stance on money.

The Interlopers is a story about two people from feuding families meeting. Two men, Ulrich and Georg, make amends one night when a tree falls on them. They bicker about who's men will find them first. Ulrich then offers him wine, which he denies, then proceeds to tell him that if his men find them first, he won't let them kill him. After a while, Georg agrees and they forgive each other, putting an end to the feud. ". . . Neighbor, if you help me bury the old quarrel I—I will ask you to be my friend." (Saki 319). They talk about the future, and how grand it would be to be friends, how everyone will be so surprised if they rode into the market together, and how they would spend time together. They call out to their men, expecting them to come, but instead wolves hear them and come. Presumably, they die by getting eaten by it does leave on a cliffhanger. "Who are they?" asked Georg quickly, straining his eyes to see what the other would gladly not have seen. "Wolves." (Saki 321). I liked this story, but it wasn't my favorite. I do find it funny, however, that when they finally made up, no one would know. No one will know the feud is over.

This story left on a cliffhanger and I think it was the most confusing one I read. The author lets you decide what happens to the boy who loves the princess. A king let people decide their innocence by letting them pick between two doors. Behind one door was a tiger, who would kill the said person. Behind the other was a maiden, and if said person picked that door they immediately got married. When the princesses lover is convicted, she knows what's behind each door. She tells him which to go into. "Her right arm lay on the cushioned parapet before her. She raised her hand, and made a slight, quick movement toward the right. No one but her lover saw her. Every eye was fixed on the man in the arena." (Stockton 363). After this, the author lets you choose what happens to the young man. I would like to think it was the door of the lady, but the princess was already jealous of those two, and as the story says, and also got her fathers barbarism. I am pretty sure she told him to go into the door of the tiger, and that makes me really sad because he didn't do anything wrong. I did like that the author let you choose what happened based on what we knew about the kings daughter.
