What equipment do I think was the most important?

(a two-volume edition of Linnaeus(the founder of the Latin classification of plants)) This item would be very, very important on our journey, because it allows us to classify every new species that we see, whether it be a plant or an animal! We could see it, give it a name, and add it to our big index of world species in no time!

(3,500 doses of diaphoretic (sweat inducer)) It is medically proven that some diseases can be cured if you just sweat a lot, because all of the bad bacteria will just come out of your body with your sweat! This will allow you to be safe and healthy, and it is easy to carry around.

(blankets) Blankets have many, many uses. You can use them to keep warm, sew them into makeshift clothing, get a good night’s sleep, and you can even use them as rags to clean up a wagon or boat. They are also lightweight and easy to travel with.

(288 knives) All of these knives might be a little heavy on our journey, but they will give us many uses. We can give them as gifts to Native Americans we pass, and we could even use them ourselves as weapons, food preparation, and hunting supplies if we have to.

(writing paper, ink and crayons) These are all very necessary to be able to document and write down all of our new information. We can write down our newly discovered plants and animals, write about our trip, and even just draw or write for fun to pass the time.

(10 1/2 pounds of fishing hooks and fishing lines) Fish are a very valuable and easily accessible source of food, when you are going to travel along multiple rivers. The fishing line and hooks, will allow for a very easy food source.

(chronometer (needed to calculate longitude)) If we are going to make a lot of new maps so we can go back to the Pacific, we need to make sure that we have the right materials and equipment to be able to make the maps.

(tourniquets) Accidents happen, and they can be really bad if there is no one around to help you. If you accidently cut yourself with a knife or on a branch, these tourniquets will make sure that you don’t bleed out and die.

(1 long-barreled rifle that fired its bullet with compressed air, rather than by flint, spark and powder) Guns can be very annoying sometimes, with the gunpowder, the bullets, and all of the other annoying parts to firing a gun. The compressed air gun will make sure that you are bringing far less and you can still fire a gun.

(420 pounds of sheet lead for bullets) Bullets are a critical part of firing a gun, because the bullet is being fired. These sheets of metal will allow the people that have guns to have ammo for a very long time.

Meriwether Lewis

Meriwether Lewis was chosen to be a Captain of the expedition to the Pacific Ocean by Thomas Jefferson. Lewis was a personal secretary of Jefferson, and he was certain that Lewis was good and trustworthy for the job. He was a great Scientific mind, and he was able to discover and write down a lot of new plant and animal Species. Lewis, with the help of a co-captain, were able to reach the Pacific Ocean without any deaths. The trip he lead took two years, four months, and ten days.

Meriwether Lewis would have been a vital part of the trip, because he is very qualified. He knows a lot about nature and life, because he was very smart and is was able to document and understand lots of newly discovered life forms. He was also very, very responsible and was a good cartographer and map-maker. Meriwether Lewis was very skilled for this trip, and everything he knew was useful in one way or another.

LaBiche and another man, named Pierre Cruzatte, were both confronted to join the Discovery Corps in Central Illinois. They were both fur traders from France, and they would be good translators with the Native. What the people didn’t know, is that they were both strong boatmen, and they could row a boat very fast. These two men were appointed to be put on the trip after this information was leaked.

Francois LaBiche was very important to the trip, and I would take him with me, because of all of the skills he knew. His translator skills would come in handy when we are talking to a group of new Native Americans. His trading skills would also be really good if we needed something from the Natives. Finally his strength and boat skills will be helpful when hunting, fishing, crafting, and traveling.

He was a very skilled hunter, and always brought a smile to the faces of the weary. The dog was purchased by Meriwether, because he wanted a companion and hunting partner. In Lewis’s journal, he writes about how docile and behaved the dog is. For a long time, historians debated whether the dog’s name was “Seaman” or “Scannon”. It is later proved that the dog was named Seaman. The color of the dog is also widely debated, but is is thought to have all black fur.

Seaman the dog was a very bright and vital part of the trip, because a dog will always make people happy. With his superion hunting skills, his obedience, and his knack to spread happiness among the tired explorers was truly a saving grace for the Discovery Corps.

This species is also known as the “Florida Woodrat” and the “Brush Rat”. This species creates dens out of sticks, leaves, and grass, that is used for multiple generations, or until the den breaks or is destroyed. These rats are herbivores, and they eat a diet of grasses, leaves, and other natural plants. This species was the first recorded “new” species by the Corps of Discovery on their journey.

This species is most notable for its big, curly horns that were used both in protection and fighting for dominance. These Bighorns would ram into each-other as a sign or superiority, and also as a way to attract a mate. These sheep have very rugged hooves, which allow then to climb up the sides of steep mountains. These sheep are able all the way from the cold Canadian mountains, to the deserts of the American Southwest.

Lewis’s Mock Orange has recently been categorized as the same species as Gordon’s mock-orange. Due to this discovery, the flower is just called the “Mock Orange”. The Mock-Orange is a flowering plant, to which the flowers have a similar scent to Oranges, with a hint of Pineapple, hence the name “Mock Orange”. These flowers are white with a yellow and orange center. These plants are commonly used in erosion control across wet ravines and streams. Grinding up the flowers and spreading them on sores will also help to relieve pain from them. These plants thrive best in the full sun, while being very close to a nearby water source.

The Nez Perce Indians were very skilled horsemen and fishermen that lived in the Rock Mountains. This native society was strongly against ammo and guns, just like their Shoshoni neighbors. This led them to be vulnerable to their enemies with Canadian trading partners. The Nez Perce indians came into contact with Lewis and Clark while they were hunting. They were not afraid of these strange men, but welcomed them into their village. They were treated with a nice dinner, and were invited to have a council meeting with the Chief, named Twisted Hair. Communication was a bit difficult, because they spoke a very strange dialect compared to the other natives they met along their trip. The group stayed in the village for a few days, satisfied with their full stomachs and new memories of these friendly folk.

The Crimson Bluffs are located in eastern Montana, very close to Yorks Islands and present-day Helena. The area is named after the vibrant red clays found on the shores, due to a shale compound in the dirt that is prone to rust. The water found flowing through the river is fueled from the nearby Missouri River. You can also find the Crimson Bluffs at 46.31N 111.93W. When Lewis and Clark were passing through the Area, there were no natives inhabiting there or the nearby area, but they did learn from Sacagawea that people would travel here to collect the vibrant red clay for face paint. The Crimson Bluffs can be found in the Northwest region of the United States, because it resides in Southwest Montana, close to the Border with Idaho. There was no religion practiced in the land, due to the lack of people. The people traveling to collect the clay is a great example of movement in the area, even though nobody lived nearby.

Fort Clatsop was the first fort that the Corps of Discovery built during their travels for the winter. The Fort is located at 46.12N 123.88W. You can also find this place near Astoria, Oregon and the Lewis and Clark River. Lewis and Clark decided to create their Fort for the Winter here, for many reasons, They were close to the ocean for salt-making, they were in an area with supple amount of hunting game, fishing, and plants to eat. Fort Clatsop can also be found in the Northwest /united States, because of its location in Oregon by the Columbia River. Since there were no Native people recorded to be living near Lewis and Clark’s new winter home, the religion practiced there was probably next to none. Though the Corps of Discovery liked where they were living, their home was only temporary. The left at the end of Winter, and the fort deteriorated and rotted away after a while. You can go and visit a model of the fort in Astoria today.
