Louis Braille created an efficient reading system for the visually impaired that is still used today. He invented this six-dot Braille system, which opened up an entire new world to access books and documents which were priorly unavailable.

After losing his sight, Louis Braille recognized the need for resources to support the visually impaired. His invention of the Braille system grew the special education system by making reading and writing accessible. In the special education world, teachers are trained specifically in braille with reading and writing but they also help students with developing life skills such as orientation and mobility.

Louis Braille's work shows the importance of making education accessible for all students. As a future teacher, there are many options that I can look at to teaching braille or even learning some of the basics to better support my students. I can also provide resources in braille if I have a student who would benefit more from that, and make sure they have access to equal learning materials.
