After their non-fiction writing, we are going to be studying a poem called ‘Memories’ written by Pie Corbett. It is a lovely poem that reflects on memories which is perfect for the Year 6s as they move into their last term of primary school. The aim of this unit is for the children to begin developing an understanding of poetry and the importance of using prosody and fluency when performing or reading a poem.

Finally, we are going to be looking at an adventure tale called ‘Kidnapped’. The aim for this unit is for the children to understand how authors create successfully create action and be able to use these techniques in their own writing. Please support your child by encouraging them to practice the model text so that they are completely secure of the story and remember all the words that go alongside the model text. Please also encourage them to listen to the prosody that is used when the story is read.

In our grammar lessons throughout Summer 1, we will continue looking at tenses and word families before their SATs exams.

 

Throughout this unit, children will be building on their learning from Autumn 1 about what is important to Muslims and in what ways they show commitment to God. They will then learn about Akhirah and investigate how this helps Muslims to lead good lives.

To support your child, you could encourage children to reflect on their beliefs about how they can lead a good life. 

 

For the remaining weeks of Summer 1, we will be building on the work that we've done during our reading lessons by looking at the topic 'Evolution and Inheritance'. The children will be learning about variation, adaptation and evolution and the different factors that affect these. The will then be writing to explain how a selected animal has adapted to the environment that it lives in.

 

During Summer 2, we will be doing a Geography unit about climate change, culminating in the children producing a persuasive piece of writing with the title, 'Why and how can I help reduce climate change?' The children will be learning about the causes and consequences of climate change and what they can do to reduce climate change.

After the SATs, we will be reading Goodnight Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian. Goodnight Mr. Tom is a novel set in World War II about an evacuee, William Beech, who is placed with a widower in his 60s, Tom Oakley. Whilst reading this book, we will be learning all about World War II, evacuation and the impact the war had on the lives of the people living in England at the time. Both the school trip and residential to Ufton Court will support the children's learning about World War II as well.

 

To support your children at home - 

During the second half of the summer term, children in Year 6 will explore topics related to self-image, body image, puberty, and emotions. This will allow them to better understand their bodies and how they are changing, while also helping them to navigate their emotions during this important developmental period.

In addition to these topics, there will also be a focus on the transition from primary to secondary school. This will help prepare students for the changes and challenges they will face as they move on to the next stage of their education.

Students will learn how to create and interpret pie charts, which are visual representations of data that can help to make complex information more accessible. They will also explore mean, which is a measure of central tendency that can be used to understand large sets of data. By learning about formulae and sequences, students will gain a deeper understanding of mathematical patterns and relationships.

Another key topic in the summer term is dimensions and scale. This involves understanding how to measure objects accurately and represent them in different ways. Finally, students will learn about angles, shapes and solids, which will allow them to explore geometry and spatial reasoning.

To support their child's learning at home, parents can encourage them to practice their math skills through activities such as puzzles, games, and real-world problem-solving. Additionally, parents can help their child by providing a quiet, well-lit space for studying, and by encouraging them to ask questions and seek additional support from their teacher if needed.
