Polyphemus is described as a "harsh and horrible type of monster." When people would visit his cave, they would be eaten. An instance where this happens is when Odysseus visits the Cyclops' cave. When Odysseus and his men first visit, Polyphemus is being hospitable, however, becomes angry and eats two of Odysseus' men. Odysseus says, "Cyclops, in the end it was no weak man's companions you were to eat by violence and force in your hollow cave."

A theme that Polyphemus represents is how intelligence is better than strength. In The Odyssey, Polyphemus was tricked by Odysseus because Polyphemus thought that he could murder Odysseus using strength. Odysseus was able to use his strategic thinking and create a plan to escape Polyphemus before Polyphemus could kill him. If Polyphemus had made a plan to kill Odysseus instead of relying on his personal brute strength, Odysseus wouldn't have been able to run away.
