Students need to make connections between how the author's words create images in their minds.

The tasks build upon each other because students are still required to go back into the text and find evidence that supports their thinking (6.6C) and also understand those plot elements like setting and characters that we're learning about in the Summer of the Mariposas(6.7D).

I reviewed the 7th grade internalizations and based off looking at all three lessons I noticed that it focuses on the students learning how to make observations of their own impressions and others impressions based off the understanding of growth and continuing to move in a positive upright direction through figurative language. With poetry it provides a different point of view to be able to create and thing creatively. When students hit a road block they are provided with solutions to their issues.

The big picture of this unit is students understanding how to recognize imagery and structure to promote their interpretation of the genre poetry. Students will recognize couplet and stanza. Students will complete tasks that encourage the retention of key vocabulary words, including rhyme and meter. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their approach to poetry using the skill of surveying a poetic text and then making a grade level apropiate predication to the author's intention surrounding mood and tone. The arc of learning is students understanding how language and word form control the pace of a poem.

Beginning with the most surface-level elements leads students to uncovering the deeper meaning by using the skills we have been working on this year (visualization, reading in context, questioning, etc).

The big picture is that students should be able to identify sensory and imagery details within a poem, and on top that be able to explain what the details tells us about the character(author) and their life. This will be something we are able to correlate with the Summer of Mariposas since there are multiple moments throughout the text where it mentions sensory details within the sisters journey.

Students need to be able to focus on the characters and understand how they are different and what makes them do or say the things within the story. The assessment, specifically the Informative Constructed Response requires students to compare the difference of the narrator (Odilia) from the beginning of the story to the end.

The big picture of "The Summer of the Mariposas" by Guadalupe Garcia McCall revolves around a journey of self-discovery, family, and cultural heritage. The story follows five sisters as they embark on a transformative road trip from Texas to Mexico, where they seek to return a mysterious, magical coin and uncover the truth about their family's past. Along the way, they confront personal challenges, face supernatural events, and grow closer as a family, all while learning important lessons about courage, responsibility, and the power of their cultural identity. The novel blends magical realism with coming of age themes, showing how the sisters’ experiences shape their understanding of themselves and their heritage.
