By 1889 he owned Carnegie Steel Corp. the biggest of its kind in the whole world. Once he figured out how to manufacture steel at a mass production rate, thats where he gained his wealth and fame. He then later died in August 11th, 1919

He first was brought into business with steamships with his partner Thomas Gibbons. After he died and his son didnt want to sell the business, Vanderbilt bought and slowly bought out Gibbons company. His real money profit and what he was best known for was his railroads and how many he made and how aggresive he was to his competitors. He then later died in January 4th, 1877.
