In chapter 5, the kindergarten teachers set aside ample time for students to work together in teams and as a whole group (Hale & Fisher, 2013). The collaboration included finding the right combination and also error analysis when the students were determining if the combinations were valid. Students also communicated when the teachers posed different scenarios and came to an agreement about answers.

Previewing new content provokes engagement and initiates student thinking about upcoming content. This practice also makes learning outcomes more transparent and assesses students' background knowledge. This strategy helps students "activate related knowledge, which will allow them to formulate crucial links between new and previously acquired content" (Magana & Marzano, 2014, p. 50).
