The Culpeper's Rebellion was a revolt led by John Culpeper, John Jenkins, and George Durant. The revolt started in 1677 and ended in 1679. The rebellion was a response to the Navigation Acts and over the Government in North Carolina. The Navigation Acts regulated the shipping of goods, which imposed taxes on the items shipped across colonies. The government in North Carolina consisted of the following: the governor, the council, half of which was appointed by the Lord's Proprietors, and an assembly elected by popular vote. Thomas Miller, a supporter of this government, later became secretary and collector of duties, and then, after acting governor. Where he later, abused his power and made many people upset. This led to the start of the Culpeper's rebellion, where the leaders of the revolt and other armed supporters arrested Thomas Miller and other government officials. The Supporters and the leaders eventually took control of the government and lived peacefully for 2 years before Culpeper was deported to England. Where he was arrested for treason but was found not guilty, ending the Rebellion.

The Culpeper's Rebellion is important to American History. The Rebellion shows one of the earliest stands against unfair taxation which was one of the turning points later in the colonies that led to the revolution. It was also one of the first times the American people saw they could revolt against unjust rule to gain the rights they deserved.

"The colonists’ resentment found an object in the deputy governor, Thomas Miller, who was also customs collector. Led by John Culpeper and George Durant, the rebels imprisoned Miller and other officials, convened a legislature of their own, chose Culpeper governor, and for two years capably exercised all powers and duties of government. Culpeper was finally removed by the proprietors and tried for treason and embezzlement but was never punished."
