The initial plan was methodically structured to allow adequate time for each phase: creating a research question, extensive literature searching, systematic screening of articles, data extraction, synthesis writing, and final revisions.

However, as the project developed, it became clear that the literature searching and screening phases took significantly longer than anticipated. Prior to this dissertation, I had never written up a systematic literature review, due to this I wasn't aware of how to best screen these articles, after consulting my supervisor I was recommended Rayyan which massively helped in narrowing down all linked sources to meet inclusion/exclusion criteria while also ensuring relevance to my central research question proved more time-consuming than expected. I also used my supervisors advice on inclusion/exclusion criteria, which then helped me extract the highest quality information/data

This delay impacted the data extraction and writing timing, leading to some overlap between phases. While this created challenges, it developed the depth and rigour of the review, allowing me to engage critically with higher-quality sources.

Throughout the dissertation process, I’ve had to adapt and problem-solve continuously in response to unforeseen challenges. Despite careful planning, the volume of irrelevant or inaccessible articles encountered during database searches (especially when aiming for high specificity and meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria) extended this phase considerably.

To address this, I learned to refine search terms iteratively, develop clearer inclusion strategies, and lean into using Rayyan as a collaborative tool to organise and manage sources. This took some time to get the hang of, but once I understood, I found Rayyan to be extremely helpful and efficient.

Another challenge was time management toward the end of the writing phase. I responded by prioritising sections based on word count, significance to my research question, and where critical evaluation would add most value. This taught me how to balance depth and conciseness under pressure, a useful skill for both academia and professional roles going forward.

While my dissertation was based on a systematic literature review and did not involve direct participant contact or primary data collection, I still ensured my work complied with ethical research standards. I submitted the necessary ethical approval documentation and confirmed that my project posed minimal ethical risk. I also reviewed the University’s research ethics policies and ensured appropriate citation and referencing standards were maintained.

While I did not actively use the University’s Future Me platform this academic year due to a combination of poor planning and technical issues, the dissertation process has significantly contributed to my professional development and career readiness. Undertaking a systematic literature review taught me key transferable skills such as critical thinking, analytical writing, research synthesis, time management, and digital resourcefulness — all of which are highly valuable across a range of careers, especially in research, health sciences, and evidence-based practice environments. As a result, I feel more confident pursuing opportunities in sport science research, performance analysis, or further study, where evidence-based reasoning is key. I also plan to explore the Future Me resources post-submission, to further align my skills with potential career paths and make the most of the support available.

Working on this dissertation has revealed how I operate most effectively. I discovered that although I perform well with a clear plan, building flexibility is crucial when unexpected delays occur, such as the extended screening period. Adapting quickly and reprioritizing tasks became second nature.

I also improved my critical‑evaluation skills. Rather than merely summarising studies, I learned to interrogate methods, compare findings, and draw connections across themes. Tools like Rayyan and Excel transformed how I organise and track large data volumes, boosting accuracy and efficiency.

If I were to repeat this process, I would begin screening sooner, maintain a dynamic synthesis log, and define my review’s scope earlier. These steps would free up time for deeper analysis and refinement.

This project has equipped me with concrete, transferable skills for a career in sport science, physiotherapy, or academic research. I can now:

Critically appraise study design and methodology to judge evidence quality.

Execute systematic searches and manage references at scale.

Synthesise diverse findings into clear, actionable insights.

I am now proficient with industry‑standard tools (Rayyan, citation managers, data trackers) and adept at turning complex data into evidence‑based recommendations. These capabilities position me well for roles in applied sports performance, rehabilitation program design, or postgraduate research, where rigorous, data‑driven decision‑making is essential.
