In Chapter 1 he reaches toward the light in the darkness as guidance to lead him to his goals. Gatsby’s hopes to have Daisy. This is symbol for having the American dream He wants something he does not have. People that came to America wanted to turn nothing into something.

The green light at the end of the dock is a symbol of how close Gatsby is to what he wants (Daisy) but still cant grab. Gatsby compares the light with Daisy. It breaks his heart not having Daisy the one thing he wants the most. "He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as i was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily glanced seaward-- and distinguished nothing except a single green light." (Fitzgerald, Pg.20) Gatsby follows Daisy around after he gets out of the war because before the war was when he first noticed her but was shipped off to war. She gets married while hes at war. He watches the green light thinking about daisy. He wants her so badly but is so close but far and just cant seem to get a hold of her like the light.

Especially since Gatsby lives right across from Daisy and the light is at all times visible to her. Gatsby uses this to gain her attention without directly calling to her in hopes she will follow it to him. The light also coincides with Gatsby's large parties hoping Daisy will attend one of them. Through all this the green light symbolizes Gatsby's hope and overall current relationship with Daisy, a distant call to see her again.

The Green Light could represent many different things. I believe the light Gatsby was stretching his arms out to represents the goals he wants to accomplish. It's representing that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. "he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way.." (Fitzgerald 20) You can't ever give up on the goals you have set, even if it means chasing them forever it may seem. When he is stretching his arms out it resembles him reaching out to make it happen. That light is there for motivation and will not let him give up.

In the novel, The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald uses Gatsby and the Buchanans to represent what it is like to experience the American Dream. Throughout the story, readers begin to see that these characters very much do, exhibit the properties of the American Dream. For example, Nick explains to the audience how well off Gatsby and the Buchanans are. "The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard - with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden" (Fitzgerald 5). Fitzgerald gives us any examples that the wealth they carry is a tremendous part of their life. Jay Gatsby and the Buchanans represent the American Dream.

The tone is largely shown through the way Nick narrates the story or how he is feeling, he is the eyes readers see the story through. For example Nicks critical observations through out the book saying things like " I was thirty. Before me stretched the portentous, menacing road of a new decade." (Fitzgerald,135) Showing just how dim the world is in Nicks mind. Nick slowly loses respect and faith in Gatsby, saying "Somehow that seemed a despicable occupation. For all I knew he was going to rob a house in a moment; I wouldn't be surprised to see sinister faces-" (Fitzgerald, 142) His perspective on Gatsby had grown darker, making the tone do the same. These fluctuations in Nicks emotions and voice largely impact the tone and as Nick grows more melancholy so does the story.

The tone is shown by how Nick tells the story and explains his emotions about everything. "I disliked him so much by this time that i didn't find it necessary to tell him he was wrong."

Tom and Daisy should stay together in the end rather than Gatsby, even though Gatsby would've done anything for her. Both Daisy and Tom are extremely vapid and do not deal with their problems but instead ignore them and just act like everything is fine, where as Gatsby is very much about feelings and confrontation. This can be seen in chapter seven, where Gatsby confronts tom about the affair they've been having. Where as Tom and Daisy were just taking passive stabs at each other. " Your wife doesn't love you ' (Fitzgerald, 130) Gatsby dreams far to big while Daisy is rather cynical and realistic. " You see everything is terrible anyhow" (Fitzgerald, 17). In the end the one who deserves Daisy and will most likely have her is Tom, due to the amount of problems they had already swept under the rug, Gatsby is just another problem.

I believe, in The Great Gatsby, that Daisy and Gatsby should be together. I believe this because in chapter seven after the accident Mr. Gatsby sat in Daisy's front lawn in plan of protecting her against Tom. i also believe that both Gatsby and Daisy would be so much more happy together than with Tom. Tom said in chapter one, " It's up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things."(Fitzgerald, pg 13). Tom being a racist is not what Daisy should be around, rather someone who would go to prison for her. That is why i believe Daisy and Gatsby should be together.

F. Scott Fitzgerald shows Gatsby as a man in love who would do everything to get Daisy. In the other hand Tom is a married man who do not worry about his wife because he has got a mistress. Gatsby should end up with Daisy because is the only one that shows love for her. "Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay."(Fitzgerald,41).

In the Great Gatsby, Tom and Gatsby both have a feeling for Daisy Buchannan but, only one of them can have her. In the story Daisy resides with tom in the valley of ashes and Gatsby resides in a huge mansion. He longs for Daisy even by throwing a party to impress her and by inviting her into his house and starts to throw shirts at her. When it comes to who has the most feeling and affection for Daisy Gatsby wins that part. Tom and Gatsby both have sights on the American Dream and Daisy wants to ride along and make it out of the valley of ashes. If anyone will make Daisy the happiest it would deffinatlyy be Gatsby becuase, he has everything that Daisy needs and wants such as money, clothes, and happiness, and Tom really doesn't show her any of that.

F. Scott has a lot in mind when writing Gatsby, Fitzgerald has a dark but also bright tone on the story, but it fluctuates. The Great Gatsby has many different tones to it, Fitzgerald really sticks out the feeling of tension and stress in Gatsby's life, this makes Gatsby have a dark and sad side to him that gradually comes out. Fitzgerald uses this sad, eerie tone to express his feelings about Gatsby and maybe how he feels in real life. This shows when Gatsby lies about his past and where he came from. " I suppose he'd had the name ready for a long time, even then. His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people—his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God – a phrase which, if it means anything, means just that – and he must be about His Father's business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty. So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year-old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end. (Fitzgerald, 6-7). It feels as if Fitzgerald is referencing a person that he knows or maybe even himself. In conclusion, Fitzgerald has a tone that no other author can really pull off, a tone of sadness yet hopefulness, but through Gatsby, Tom, and Nick he shows a different side of him.
