In all three productions, the characters and plot develop. In Hamilton, Hamilton wants to start a new nation and meet his son. In War Horse, the horse is taken from a farm and then the people try to search for it, and they end up finding the horse. In Dear Evan Hansen, Evan Hansen, who is a loner, is socially awkward, and has no friends, makes a fake friendship with a kid who has passed away and Evan almost replaces their son.

Drama in a play is different than a movie because Broadway drama is more raw and organic. Movies are edited and auto tuned to perfection until you cannot feel the raw emotion found in imperfections and hard work on the stage. Also, in a play, you have a 180 view of the stage which usually offers something interesting at every angle, whereas in a movie, the camera points at something and you are forced to watch it.

The setting of the last one pretty much perfectly fits the plot. Because the musical is about war, the background is dull, dark, and a sense of dustiness is created from smoke. It paints a serious situation. However, there are scenes shown with happiness, such as the one with the girl and the horse. As a result, the background doesn’t quite fit the entire musical ideally.

The importance of setting in all of the shows was that it sets the mood for each. Like in Dear Evan Hansen, the setting was quite plain because it was in a normal life/house setting, while in Warhorse and Hamilton, the setting is very outdated because they took place long ago, the same goes for the costumes being very old-fashioned, rather than Dear Evan Hansen’s modern day clothing.
