There are multiple reasons why an explorer would stay where they explored so that they could do more exploring. By doing this, they can discover new plants, crops, and animals, that they can take back to their country. They can also create colonies, like what John Smith did.
They colonize so that they can gain new territory for their country, and so that they can explore and find more new things. They may colonize because the new land is good enough to start living, and more people from their home country may come over, such as the Mayflower.
Some do not stay in their explored land because it is already colonized by other countries, or it is not good quality land, and wouldn’t be ideal to colonize.
When explorers colonize new land, they often become important. Them and their country becomes known for the great exploration and colonization. They can also colonize and grow their country to the new land. By doing that, they receive a profit. They can also use their new colony to spread their religion.

Left behind: Most tribes around Chesapeake Bay spoke Algonquian, Siouan, or Iroquoian. John Smith and other European explorers left behind the English language. This connects to today because without the European explorers going to present day United States and teaching them English, parts of the US may not have English as the main today.

Took: John Smith made trade agreements with the natives. He gave Europe the chance to trade things such as crops, technology, and ideas with the Natives. This connects to present day because Europe has a lot of crops that used to only grow in the Americas, but because of trades like these they were able to get them.

John Smith’s diary talks about his personal experiences in his journey such as the people he meets, what he finds, and the progress of his journey and making Jamestown. The map shows things such as what the land looked like, where things were, and what types of physical features there are.

If these were closer to modern day, he could have used more things such as pictures and videos, not only a diary, to document his journey. He could also make his map using new technology, and have the map more accurate using gadgets that weren’t invented at his time.

They would be able to navigate around the places they’ve already explored using the map because it shows them where everything was.

John Smith stayed in America for two years. While there, he used his leadership skills, bravery, and previous military background to create Jamestown. He explored all around Chesapeake Bay, and lead the colony. The Powhatan Confederacy captured him, but Pocahontas, the chief’s daughter, saved him.
John Smith treated the natives well most of the time. Occasionally, he would threaten them in order to get what he wanted. The natives helped John Smith and gave him food and supplies. But some of the natives were not happy with John Smith, and tried to attack him because he was trespassing on their land. Even though some did not like the Europeans, the natives were one of the main reasons that Jamestown survived. Even though John Smith did not always treat the native very well, they still helped him and were a big factor into the success of Jamestown.
