Communication by Emma

As two of the students in the classroom were non-verbal I was required to learn and use different forms of communication. One of the students used objects of reference to communicate. The student had a storage space near their individual work station which held different objects of reference the student and person communicating with the student could use.
The other student used a picture exchange communication system to communicate. The student had a book which had pictures stuck onto velcro. The student or person communicating with them would take the picture of what they wanted to communicate and show it to the other person. The book was divided up into different sections of the student's day and had pictures of possible things the student would like to communicate.
I found it extremely interesting to see view these forms of communication in action. As we had discussed the picture exchange communication system from my special education module. By offering these students the opportunity to communicate it allowed them to have freedom. Also, it was evident it eased their frustrations when they were able to communicate. As they often only came disruptive as a result of poor communication. Students were able to develop their expressive communication skills as a result and overcome the barrier of verbal communication (Griffin & Shevlin, 2011).
As one of the students had just become verbal in the last year. I had to ensure I was direct, clear and simple in my choice of language to not confuse the student. Therefore, I was sure to think of about my questions and responses to the student carefully. The student already had a vast knowledge of vocabulary which displayed to me how quickly one acquires language.
The play therapist Fidelma also incorporated sign language into her sessions as she would welcome the students through sign as a means to communicate. Personally I know sign langugae and found it extremely interesting to see it being used as a means of communication with those that do not have a hearing impairment. I feel if the students were to stay non-verbal it would be beneficial for them to learn sign language as a means to communicate when they are older.
