In the aftermath of 9/11, not only did America mourn, but shockwaves were felt around the globe. Kimeli Naiyomah is a student in New York in September 2001. Upon returning to his Maasai village in Kenya, he recounts his experience, and his people immediately want to help. But what can a poor African village provide? The answer is powerful and touching, and demonstrates that sometimes the smallest gestures are the most deeply felt. (Ages 8-10)

In 1974, French aerialist Philippe Petit threw a tightrope between the two towers of the World Trade Center and spent an hour walking, dancing, and performing high-wire tricks a quarter mile in the sky. This picture book captures the poetry and magic of the event with a poetry of its own: lyrical words and lovely paintings that present the detail, daring, and--in two dramatic foldout spreads-- the vertiginous drama of Petit's feat.

In 1931, the John J. Harvey was the ultimate in fireboats, an essential part of the New York Fire Department. But times change, and by 2001, the Harvey was retired, destined for the scrap pile. Until September 11, when the fire hydrants at the attack site were inoperable, and the water of the Hudson River was needed to combat the burning buildings. With a little ingenuity, a team quickly got the John J. Harvey in working order, proving that she was still the best fireboat on the river. (Ages 4-8)

On September 11, 2001, America was tragically attacked by terrorists, or people who use violence to spread fear. Close to 3,000 people lost their lives that day. However, in response to the attacks, many first responders and good citizens came together and stepped up to help one another to safety. Eventually our country worked together to heal, show care, and rebuild. Saturday, September 11, 2021 will mark the 20th anniversary of the tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001. Below are optional resources to use in your classroom to support instruction or discussions about September 11th and its impact on our country.
