1. Why did Rome control much of this area of the world? For how long did it do so?

During 4bc to 60ad, the Roman Empire had great control of most of Rome during the time of St Paul. The Roman Empire was very powerful due to two main reasons, popular trade routes and religion. The Carthaginians had a very vast trade route in the Mediterranean, which the Romans were greatly interested in. This soon resulted in an immense war including a series of three wars between The Roman Empire and the Carthaginians. After a hundred years of brutal battle, the Roman Empire was successful in conquering this very popular Mediterranean trade routes. After the Romans defeat against the Carthaginians, this allowed the Roman Empire to expand their power throughout the Mediterranean.

The Roman Empire was very powerful which meant they owned large portions of land. The were two main types of trade routes; land and sea. The sea routes covered the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The land trade routes were used more frequently than the sea routes leading to many more land trade routes. Transporting military and trade were the two main factors for building trade routes/roads. The Silk Road was the main trading route the Romans used. Many roads, bridges and canals were built to make trading quicker and to expand trading in Rome. The most common transportation of people and goods, included the following; ships,

Carts-Were used by the more wealthier social structure such as the Empire and Patrician Families.

Wagons- Were used for short and quick transportation.

Mules- Were used as their skin is tougher and harder. Their special type of skin can withstand extreme temperatures. Can last a long time without water, ave hardened hooves to travel on loose gravel surfaces, only need 4-5 hours of sleep a day, can hold a cart filled with goods for trade.

Alexandria- Alexandria, Egypt was a main city during the Roman Empire. A great lighthouse which is one of the seven wonders of the Roman world stood in the city of Pharaoh's. During the time of St Paul Alexandria was also well known for their religion strife they face. Martyrdom was created which meant people were killed for their religious beliefs. Alexandria had a high level of education teaching scientist, scholars, philosophers, mathematicians, artist and historians. Alexandria was also very important during the Roman Ages as the city was a great exporter and importer of silk and grain. These two items were very important for trading, as silk was used by wealthy people who paid a high price for school which boosted economics. Grain was also an important trading item as horses and mules were used for trading other items and grain is what

they received for feed. Other important cities included; Aegyptus, Anatolia, Germania Inferior and Hispania.

Post 2- Explain in 50-100 words the significance of the conversion of Saul of Tarsus.

Before St Paul’s conversion to Christianity Paul was known as Saul. Saul’s profession was a zealot which intentionally persecuted the followers of Jesus after his death. After Jesus’s resurrection, Saul swore to wipe out Christianity and the new Christian Church which was called ‘The Way’. Acts 9:1 says Saul was "breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples." Paul received a letter from the high priest informing Saul that he was to kill all christian followers in the city Damascus. On Saul’s journey on the road of Damascus, a very bright ray of sunlight blinded Paul. A voice spoke to Paul: “Saul, Saul, why do you continue to persecute me?” (Matthew 23:37). Saul responded: “Who are you, Lord?” The title “Lord” was employed at this point as a mere term of respect, for he knew not who had addressed him. (Luke 10:41; 22:31.) After Jesus spoke to Saul he spoke to Ananias (a disciple) telling him to deliver a message to Saul, saying he was the chosen person to preach the gospel of God. Once Saul arrived at Damascus he started praying to God for help. Ananias visited Saul and laid his hands on Saul repeating what God had told him to pass on. When Paul rose, his sight was restored and was baptised within the hour. Saul stayed in Damascus for three days with the disciples. After Saul’s conversion he changed his name to Paul. This conversion was so significant as it taught the Jews that they can learn Christianity. Another significance of Paul’s conversion proves that Jesus Christ can choose anyone to convert to Christianity no matter what profession or religion.

Paul was sent on a second missionary journey in late summer of 49 AD. His mission was to teach that circumcision is necessary before a person can be saved. (Galatians 2:1-2.) St Paul’s mission is known as the Jerusalem Conference where Paul gathered with Barnabas, Titus and others traveled to Jerusalem to meet with apostles, brethren, and elders regarding the relationships between salvation and circumcision. Some of the success of this second missionary journey include: In Philippi they convert Lydia (Acts 16:13-15), they cure a slave girl of her evil spirit and are thrown into prison (Acts 16:16-24) and their jailer is converted (Acts 16:25-34).

The challenge for Paul was staying true to God and believing in the Christian religion even regarding his previous job. The cultural challenge that St Paul faced in his epistles was learning that no matter how consumed you are in someone's wrong behaviour, you return them with love resulting with God’s approval.

People who spoke Greek were either; administrators, politicians, lawyers, literatures and the military. Even though so many languages were spoken throughout the Empire, St Paul spoke the language of tongues.
