Suleiman was a man who believed in Religious equality. He thought that if his empire was to be successful, he should allow everyone to have religious freedom. This would cause a lot less religion related conflict. One way he did this was by accepting the Millet system. In this, a millet was an individual religion. Each millet was allowed the freedom of worship and to establish their own institutions ( Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs). Along with this, with each new territory he required in his expansion efforts, he allowed the conquered people to keep their faith (Conquerors episode). This was a way to keep the resistance to the expansion to a minimum. His empire had many different religions living together and in peace, which was a reason as to why he was so magnificent (Map of religious divisions on Europe in 1555).

Another reason Suleiman was significant was because of his immense work with expanding his empire. Thanks to Suleiman, the Ottoman army was able to become one of the greatest militarist forces in history. With the help of this army, Suleiman was able to help expand the empire in almost all directions. Some examples of his expansion efforts are that in the south he moved into Egypt, in the north he took Ukraine, into Mesopotamia in the east, and Bosnia in the west ( Godwin). Due to Suleiman's grand expansion efforts, the Ottoman empire was able to a very large amount of power in Europe. This proves his significance.

As Suleiman was just starting out as Sultan, he was not like others before him. Suleiman did not use fear as a way to institute power in his empire. Instead, Suleiman took an interest in art and fashion. This made him more likable and peaceful. (Conquerors episode). Suleiman's personality and actions at the beginning of his reign really helped set the stage to the rest of his career as sultan. If his followers were not initially fearful of him, they would not think of him as a bad person for the rest of his term. Also, Suleiman was nice to his slaves and often formed very close bonds with them. This reveals that he felt as if we was not worthy of being with people of a lower class, showing that he was humble and a good person. (Conquerors episode).

Suleiman was a very good and powerful leader, however he was also very demanding of his followers. He had declared that all his subjects must make an oath of loyalty to him, and those who did not do this, were his enemies. This was a very strange practice and instilled fear into his followers in order to make them like him. He eventually got brutal/violent with them overtime (Conquerors episode). This was a reason as to him not being magnificent, however the reasons for him being magnificent greatly outweighed the negatives.
