Costa Rica er et land uten en hær siden 1948, og er det eneste latin amerikanske landet uten hær. 

I 1987 mottok presidenten; Óscar Arias Sánchez nobels fredsprisen for sin fredsprossess under de væpnede konflikten i Sentral-Amerika 

I 1821 erklærte Costa Rica sammen med Nicaragua, Salvador, Honduras og Guatemala  seg fri fra Spania og formet den Sentral-Amerikanske Republikk. En gang var disse landene under Mexico. i 1848, erklærte Costa Rica seg for en selvstendig republikk. 

Soldaten José Santamaría er en nasjonalhelt, han døde i kamp mot William Walker. I dag har Costa Ricas politikk stabilisert seg.

Costa Rica er en hage full av rikdom, Coco øyen er kanskje det mest spesielle naturreservatet vi har i dag. Øya står på  UNESCO verdens arv liste, det bor mage verdifulle dyrearter som gjør at det kan bli gjort studere på evolusjonen. Øya fungerte som gjemmested for pirater, piratene gjemte ekstraordinære skatter fra det 17 og 18 århundre. Mye av landskapet kan man se i filmen Parque Juràsio. Det er et utmerket sted å observere dyrene i havet og et perfekt sted å dykke i undervannshuler. 

Arenal vulkanen 
er en av de mest imponerende vulkanen på vest kysten av Mellom-Amerika,  med lava som renner ned på sidene.
