One of the most significant religious figures, Catherine McAuley was born in 1778, in Ireland. Catherine was raised in a wealthy, Catholic family and followed her Father’s footsteps throughout her short but powerful life. She was an influential woman, who shaped religion today. Catherine devoted her life to caring for others in need and establishing the House of Mercy in 1823. She made her Profession of Vows and created the Order of the Sisters of Mercy in 1831. Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy and also many hospitals, schools and other places in need. The Sisters of Mercy opened their first Victorian hospital – St Benedict’s in Malvern - in 1920 and after its years of success, they later opened the Mercy hospital in Melbourne. Catherine McAuley is a successful and inspirational person who we should idolise and follow in her footsteps.

In the passage, John 2:1-11, Jesus turns the water into wine.
The passage follows:
2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
This passage influenced Catherine McAuley to help others in need.

The writing of Catherine Mcauley is very significant and influential. The following quotation from The writings from Catherine Mcauley is directed at society and is telling us to be kind to one another for everyone to be happier and for the world to be a better place. 'Our charity is to be cordial. Now cordial signifies something that renews, invigorates and warms. Such should be the effect of our love for each other.'

She was always happy to help people in need and to love each other.
Prophetic work of Jesus
Catherine Mcauley wanted to spread the message of God and to teach others about what he did. She wanted to open up schools to teach children and women and did this later in life.
Kingly work of Jesus
Catherine Mcauley helped people who were sick and helped them get better.
