Question 1: The "beastie" or the "snake thing" represents all the unknown dangers of the island. This is significant as Ralph would rather dismiss the threat than deal with it first time as he is in denial of such a creature.

Question 2: Jack's behavior in this chapter paints him as a violent and impulsive person. The rest of the boys didn't think about the consequences of their actions which foreshadows that in the future they will end up making a big mistake that will put their lives at stake.

Question 4: The boys treat Ralph and Jack well in contrast to Piggy who they make fun of. This is ironic because Piggy is a lot less rude and has more common sense than Ralph or Jack. This suggests that humans tend to follow what the more popular members are doing without much question.

Question 1:Jack is now obsessed with showing the rest of the boys that he has what it takes to kill a pig. That is his first priority.

Question 2:All the other boys are having fun and being irresponsible. Ralph, Simon, and Jack are the only boys that are making an effort to make shelter and get food. Golding tells us that human nature is to put the burden of hard work on others. The other boys lack the determination that Ralph, Simon, and Jack have.

Question 3:Jack and Ralph both are very determined to reach different goals which leads them into getting into arguing and fighting sometimes. Their difference may lead to a split within the group of boys.

Question 3:The hunters paint themselves in order to blend in with the environment to sneak up on the pig. The makeup symbolizes Jack's decent into savagery.

Question 4:The boys have adrenaline running through their bodies and are very excited that they have finally killed the pig. This is significant, because Jack has taken the life of an animal and they are all ecstatic about it.

Question 6:I think more of the boys will side with Jack because he was successful with his mission, and he apologized for not tending to the fire. However, the boys show much more passion about getting the meat while they do not care much about the ship getting away.

Question 1: When Ralph was recalling things about himself that he didn't know about, such as biting his nails, he accidentally says out load "I'll be sucking my thumb next". He realizes that he is regressing into more childlike manners. He just happens to think of a habit he could get into and has no intention behind it, although if one of the boys had overheard him, they would think of him as weak, scared, and childlike. This would have got him teased. The fact that he is talking to himself shows that he is quite lonely.

Question 3: After the group of hunters and Ralph encounter the pig, they pretend that Robert is the pig and jab at him with their spears. Even Ralph wanted to fight, with the desire to hunt taking control of his actions. Robert is actually in pain and shouts for them to stop, and after a while they do, leaving him on the ground. Once Ralph experiences these emotions he begins to understand Jack's viewpoint. This shows that even Ralph is starting to become a savage and hints that he will eventually become like Jack and the hunters as the story progresses.

Question 5: I think Jack wants to go up the mountain even though it's already dark because he wants to prove to everyone that he's not afraid of anything. Ralph feels conflicted about the decision to go up the mountain in the dark because he knows it's dangerous and they could get hurt but he still wants to go to prove that he's as brave as Jack, so nobody loses faith in him as a leader. Ralph's calmness is displayed by taking the lead just as he did at Castle Rock.

Question 3: I think that the other boys were ashamed of wanting to go with Jack and be a hunter so they had to sneak off while Ralph and others were occupied. The choir respected Ralph and his leadership, but the boys may also have wanted to revert back to their position in the choir with their connection with Jack as hunters. Therefore, they chose the enticement of a hunt followed by a feast as offered by Jack.

Question 4: Right after Jack and the others leave, Ralph begins to question and talk to himself. His reaction is significant because for the first time we see him being unsure and lacking in confidence. He also feels very defeated and hopeless. He ends up relying on Piggy for hope and answers.

Question 7: Jack's decision to attack the sow and her piglets is extremely cruel and foolish showing that Jack has allowed evil to totally affect his decisions. Now, he can defeat Ralph by killing the defenseless boys, Piggy and Simon.

Question 2: Jack orders the boys to dance in the rain, similar to the mock hunt in which Robert got hurt. The dance gives the boys something in which to release their energy, while Ralph doesn't offer such an opportunity. This repetitive chanting Jack uses to make the boys feel "as though repetition would achieve safety of itself" regardless. This repetition provides a sense of calmness and relief from assuming responsibilities for the group.
Question 3: Simon performs an act of kindness when he loosens the parachute lines to set the "figure" free. He goes back down to the boys and tells them there is nothing to fear. Piggy states, "we ought to go to make sure nothing happens," which is ironic as Simon dies.
Question 4: The author changes the focus from Simon's individuality to the overall picture of the entire island and the elements. Simon represents knowledge as fundamental as the elements.

Piggy is in denial of any responsibility for Simon's murder and blames Simon for his odd behavior. Piggy even says "what good're you doing talking about that" when Ralph talks about Simon's death being their fault.
Question 3:They deem Jack a "proper chief" because he has weaponry, the makings of war. They feel the protection of weaponry, and man has a psychological natural instinct for warfare.
Question 4: Roger's sadistic impulses that were kept in check in the beginning of the book have now been released. Jack's decision to beat Wilfred impacts Roger and causes Roger not to trust him.

Question 1: The twins realize that Ralph is losing his grip, and are now deathly scared of Jack and his power. Referencing a angry schoolmaster named Old Waxy, they say that if Jack "gets waxy we've had it." Their fear of Jack's anger means that it could be very harmful to the group.

Question 2: The other boys do not care about the fire or getting rescued anymore as shown when Piggy brings the topic up and they all ignore him. Jack's stealing of Piggy's glasses symbolizes his stealing their hope, their rescue, and Simon's life from them.

Question 3: Roger now experiences the fact that he can wield power over others, such as when he pushes the rock off the cliff near Samneric. Roger has become affected with the evil that is permeating all the boys.

Question 4: Ralph and Jack both have a stick sharpened at both ends showing that they have an instrument that is harmful to both others and themselves. Sam and Eric are tortured for speaking to Ralph. Ralph then "knew he was an outcast 'Cos I had some sense," but he doesn't accept the fact like Simon did, which got Simon killed anyways. Although the boys' loyalty has shifted to Jack, Jack's hatred of Ralph has only intensified as any sliver of common sense no longer exists.

Question 5: They burn the forest to ensure they capture and find Ralph, but this is foolish because burning the forest would also hurt themselves and deprive them of the fruits on the trees. Ralph says "Fools! … what would they eat tomorrow?" In addition, the fire needs to be on the hill in order to secure their rescue.

Question 8: The irony is that despite the rescue of the boys, providing a somewhat positive ending, a war in their hearts has taken place on the island between the boys. At the same time there is a real war raging in the world around them that is similar to the evil in the hearts of all mankind.
