Hello everyone!
For my first two circles, I used line as the element. The first one has a principle of variety and the second one has a principle of balance. I will admit, I used the sample as a guide as to how to get the hang of this project. I’m not very artistic so I needed a little help getting me creativity going. I notice that I do like the look of the second circle with the element of balance. Everything looks more uniform to me. I think the first circle I did looks a little more chaotic.

For my third circle, I did an element of color and the principle of variety. I basically just made it very colorful circle using my daughters crayons and markers.

For my last two circles I did try to get a little more creative as you suggested to use magazines or advertisements. Luckily I had an Ulta catalog. I did my fourth circle with an element of color and a principle of unity. I just found a bunch of photos of products that shared different shades of the color blue. For my last circle I did an element of texture with a principle of variety. I used the same catalog and found photos of different textures of hair, clothing, beauty products and even food. I found that I was able to be a lot more creative using the catalog. There’s so much more to work with instead of just using crayons, markers and pens. However, with the catalog cut outs it was a lot harder to work with the space inside the circle. I think in the future I’d like to recreate a larger circle using another catalog just to see how creative I can get.

I was able to find glitter, pipe cleaner, and jewel stickers to create different types of texture. I really enjoyed doing this circle and actually felt creative. It was a little hard to get the pipe cleaner to stick together and onto the paper but I had something heavy sitting on it for a while until it stuck.
#5 Shape and Rhythm. I used squares to create this rhythm and thought of playing checkers.

I think my favorite circle is #5. I enjoy the idea of different objects making up the textures. I also really enjoy #3 because there are different shapes besides just the three black shapes when you look closer. My favorite part of the assignment was making the circles, its very calming. For my first circle I tried to add as many colors as possible to really show a variety. Number 2 I had a hard time trying to figure out balance for some reason, I would have to say this is my least favorite one.

The color and wave of lines make me feel calm and then it feels exciting with the zig zag. #2 is line (element), rhythm (principle) and color. I struggled a bit with this combination because while it was simple, it was hard to draw it in a creative way. I think that I was able to be a bit creative by making a graph type drawing though.

1. The element was texture and the principle was variety. I demonstrated this by dividing my circle into four quarters. Each quarter represented a different texture. In the top left, I tried to copy the flow of fabric. I shaded some parts darker than others to demonstrate that light plays a great role in how it hits fabric. In the top right, I attempted to draw the texture of wood. This one was a bit difficult since wood has a variation of lines that go in many different directions. The lines are fairly thin, but there are some circles in there, as well. In the bottom left, I drew a stony path. I'm most proud of this corner since I think my shading made the texture pop. In the bottom right, I tried to draw the texture of a clay tile roof. I think my shading went well in this corner, too. Ultimately, I can "feel" the texture of the bottom two drawings. They look more realistic and it makes me think about the amount of time that artists have to put into their work to receive their wanted texture.
2. The element was texture and the principle was proportion. At first, I was thinking about changing the principle for this circle since I couldn't think of anything that was proportional and had a recognizable texture. Then, I thought about kitchen/bathroom tiles. Most of the time, they are equal squares with a bit of color, which is what I tried to recreate here. I was going for a mosaic look and I think it went nicely.
3. The element was line and the principle was variety. This circle was fairly easy and fun, too. It let me experiment with different styles of lines. I used different thicknesses and practiced many different types of lines. There are some horizontal, vertical, curvilinear lines.
4. My element was shape and my principle was variety. This element was fairly easy, just like circle 3. It let me experiment with different shapes. At the bottom, most of my shapes are geometric. At the top of the circle, the shapes are organic and freeforming. In the middle, I tried to do a transition where the organic shapes slightly resembled geometric shapes.
5. For the fifth circle, the element I chose was color and the principle was unity. For this circle, I got a bunch of reds and colored them in a wheel-like style. I wanted to try and make an ombre peppermint design, but unfortunately, one of my pinks was very bright. One of the pinks also had a cooler base, which meant it was harder to match to the other colors. However, I still think the circle represents the element and principle fairly well.

However, the lines are all actually calculated, as well with shapes hidden within the lines.

Circle #4 I expressed what I believed to be lines with a sense of unity. The unfinished line going to the right, I did so purposely. So that the viewer can unite the line to the end of circle and essentially complete the circle in their minds.

Last but not least circle #5 Color and Rhythm

Here as you all can see the colors are in order providing an understanding rhythm to the piece. While I am a fan of bright colors, I thought this piece could bring a sense of joy in the anticipation for this upcoming summer, my favorite season of the year.

For my first circle I used the element color and principle variety this one is probably my favorite I just like how it looks. Then I did line and balance this was ok I tried to make something that looks balanced but I think the line spacing was a little weird. The my first circle is line and emphasis this one was interesting I don’t really know how I feel about this one because it looks sort of weird. Then I did shape and variety I liked this one just because I was able to draw a different variety of shapes then I did line and variety I also liked this one because of the variety of lines it was pretty fun to do this one. This assignment was pretty fun to do just because of the variety of element and shapes and it wasn’t too hard to do. In the end it was actually kind of relaxing to do.

I enjoy manga, the power of line work is really captured in comic form. Sadly that can be lost in anime and western animated cartoons. I appreciate the great power of 'simple' lines on the page.

#1 Line was my element where Balance was my principle. I liked this because the overview of it was actually relaxing to make. When you observe the art once its finished, it's satisfying because the lines do have to somewhat be symmetrical

#2 Line Variety stresses me out when I look at it since everything is out of order and nothing about it makes sense but sometimes that's the objective of art; its crazy simplistic form.

#3 When I thought of shape balance, immediately I thought of reflection. While it is similar to line balance, a step back reveals a shape and there is no better shape to reflect other than a cube. Drawing this was nostalgic for me as I used to draw this all the time as a young kid.

#4 Color variety was easy with the pie chart. It reminds everyone of the rainbow game everyone grew up playing or color tag. While it's not too heavy on the crazy shape or color, it firmly states the difference and flexibility in colors.

#5 I did texture unity as a rope hold many different forms (quite literally) and different looks. Due to its rigid build, the flairs of the thin strings immediately gives the texture look.

#1 Line & Unity - The idea of my example implies a flow and direction, while unity suggests a coming together of different parts to create a cohesive whole. The phrase makes me think of order, balance, and cooperation, reminding me that we are all connected and can work together towards a common purpose, despite our individual differences and goals.

#2 Line & Rhythm - The combination of line and rhythm suggests to me the idea of movement and flow. A line represents a visual path or direction, while rhythm implies a sense of consistency. When I think of line and rhythm, I imagine how different types of lines - such as straight can create a sense of movement or energy in a composition. Rhythm can enhance this effect by adding a sense of consistent pacing to the overall design. Overall, my combination of line and rhythm makes me think of dynamic movement and visual interest. It suggests a sense of energy and liveliness, which can be used to create compelling and engaging designs or compositions while maintaining a consistent pattern.

#3 Shape & Unity - For this example I imagined how different shapes can be combined to create a larger composition, with each shape contributing to the overall visual balance and harmony. The combination of shape and unity makes me think of visual balance and coherence. It reminds me that even though a design may be composed of many different or like shapes and elements, they can come together to create a unified whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

#4 Shape Rhythm - The combination of shape and rhythm suggests to me the idea of visual movement and pattern within a design. The idea of shape implies a certain form or structure, while rhythm is consistent. I imagined how different shapes can be arranged in a repetitive or patterned manner to create a sense of visual movement or flow. This can be achieved through the use of shapes with varying sizes, orientations, or angles, or by repeating shapes in a consistent and organized manner like my example above.

Shape and Rhythm made me think of a visually dynamic design that created a sense of movement and energy. It reminds me of how shapes can be used to create patterns that draw the eye and add interest to a composition.

#5 Shape and Rhythm - I did decide to use Shape and Rhythm again because this piece caught my eye and thought it would be another perfect example because When I see art or designs that make use of shape and rhythm, I admire the use of repeating shapes or patterns that creates a sense of visual rhythm, which can draw the viewer's eye across the composition in a deliberate way whether it be basic or complex this example can be a dynamic and an engaging composition for something simple with repeating shapes and patterns adding a sense of visual interest and movement to the overall piece.

For #1, I decided to add different types of lines and curves. For #2, I wanted to add lines but maintain a balance. As I drew the lines, I wanted them to be mirrored lines and keep a symmetrical design. For #3, I wanted to make it more fun so I drew different shapes and colored them black so it can stand out. I drew circles, hearts, ovals, triangles, squares, rectangles and a pentagon. #4, was based on different objects with different textures. A hair tie is stretchy and soft, a quarter is cold and round yet a hair pin is hard and straight with a curvy side. I added a little picture of wood, and a bush. I thought the wood and leaves are very different in texture so it would be perfect for this circle. Lastly, #5 was based on the color red. Rose pedals, red pillows, red couches, a sign of 10% off and tile was added to this circle to create unity.
