What I learned when researching sex addictions is that there are many different varieties of addictions. An addiction is an addiction and it does not mean just drugs or alcohol. Working with the youth you need to understand the culture and language such as the slang they use. Trying to connect and build a relationship with your clients is essential to meeting them where they are at times. My meme is making fun of how a counselor could be confused if they didn’t understand what their client was saying and feeling. In the article Counseling and Psychotherapy Theories in Context and Practice, Carl Rogers notes in Client-centered therapy, he believed in building a relationship and not being judgemental. I believe that if I make an effort to understand the culture and slag of the client I will build a stronger bond therefore the client will be more prone to talk freely and express their feelings.

My suicide handbook was created during a time in my life when I was dealing with this issue at home. It was touch but I got through both the personal struggle and the project. It was very helpful to know this info and wish I did have it as a teaching with several of my students suicidal idolization and even a student taking his life during my last year teaching. During this class I took another online course and became a Psychological First Aid certified. I learned that it is much like a treasure nurse in the ER, assessing individuals. After assessing it is knowing what is needed and helping that person get the resources they need.

I was much like I did when in my practicum taking zero suicide appointments and filling out the intake forms after the appointment. I was part of a group of 3 students who took on this Photovioce Research Project. It was not part of this class but since it was a group and we did some group counseling I thought it fit. We conducted group meetings with the individuals and with the sensitive subject we discussed feelings and gave some resources to help them. Another student and I took on the challenge of putting on the first annual campus walk. My colleague was approached by someone at the suicide coalition meeting and we immediately said yes. We had two months to put it together and had 40 people show up the day of the event. There was even a high school boy's basketball team that showed up. The event was great.

In this padlet you will find all my coursework for the Mental Health and Wellness Bridge to LPC program. I had chosen some papers, projects, presentations, and even a few group projects that highlighted what I learned in those classes. During my two years of course work I feel I grew my knowledge of counseling and how I relate to it.

In conclusion-

I learned through my process what my theory and approach to being a LPC is. I know how to conduct myself as a counselor to protect myself and my client through different ethical issues. I found out that I am very passionate about veteran wives and the special needs population. I want to continue my schooling so I can have my own practice and help others.
