Something is equitable and fair from the perspective of those who already have basic human rights, which is the dominant group in society. The dominant group in society is responsible for creating laws and rules that we abide by, and thus, they are responsible for deciding if they are equitable and fair. Just because something is deemed equitable and fair, doesn’t actually mean such. As a result, the dominant group will deem them equitable and fair without considering the opinions, history, and perspective of those who are historically at a disadvantage in terms of achieving equal rights.

1. Basic human rights are rights that every human is entitled to regardless of external circumstances. These include but are not limited to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These rights are NOT privileges and should not be treated as such.
2. We can go about achieving these rights by ensuring children from a young age are aware of and knowledgable on the rights they possess as a human. In addition, we can educate ourselves on other communities where these rights are being treated as privileges. Once educating ourselves, we can make an effort to advocate for these communities and take direct action in putting an end to their oppression.
3. Respect means truly understanding and valuing people's preferences and cultural backgrounds and treating them as they would want to be treated.
4. In an ideal world, we would take into account the individual needs of each person when determining what is fair and equitable. However, oftentimes those in the dominant group tend to make decisions about what's fair and equitable without taking into consideration the wants and needs of minority groups. As a result, not every person is getting what they need to succeed.
