For Assignment #2 I decided to interview a parent with a child with disability.
Name of the parent: Nancy Pocasangre
Relation to me: friend
What is the child’s disability?
Autism
At what age was the child diagnosed with ASD?
At the age of three
How old is the child now?
15,21
How did you realized that something was wrong with the child?
He wasn’t communicating with other or with me, and he was not also playing like a regular kid.
How did it affect you and your family?
We are a family of seven I have three girls and two boys. My two boys have autism and it has been battle. My husband doesn’t not support the idea that they have autism so it is difficult for me to deal with them alone. The first step is to accept that there’s something wrong with your child. Next, is to seek for help, I have been looking for programs to help them develop better. This affects my family because I don’t my husband’s support and he treats them like if they were normal. He gets frustrated and it doesn’t help them. My girls do know what’s going on with them and they are the ones that help me find information and different ways to help them.
Do you think that the educational assistance being provided to your children is effective?
Yes, they are able to communicate verbally now, and one goes to college and the other one goes to high school and he still receives speech classes.

From this interview I learned that it is evident that a disability can develop more in boys than girls and that it is important that parents accept that there’s something wrong with their child and to look for help. Early intervention is highly important in a child with any disability. In the youtube video, I learned that the impact of having a sliding can be both positive and negative. The sibling needs to be able to take care of the person with disability like if he or she was the parent. A positive impact is that it makes them a better person and they learn from each other. A negative impact is that the sibling needs to find someone that accepts both the sibling with disability and is able to deal with it. Just like Joseph and his wife.

I knew that the first step is to recognize that there's something wrong with the child. Then I knew that early intervention is important. From this assignment my two take aways are that it is difficult to deal with a sibling
with disability. They have to identify very well who they social interact with and who they decide to spend their life with. From the interview, I learned that not having your spouse's support is difficult and that men usually do not accept these kind of disabilities. It is hard for men to accept that there's something going on with their boys.
