I like this bot from it's look. The markers are nice and flush with the body. Unfortunately that also meant is was rather heavy, making the peg weaker than it was, and it slipped of the axle very easily. Also, I wasn't careful enough when sticking the pens on, so their bottom bumped into the peg, which slowed it massively down.

This is bot v2.0 and it worked better as it was less heavy. In this one I tried it placing the axle to the middle of the peg, to give it better grip. That worked in that regard, but it left the momentum a bit weak, so it didn't wiggle as much as one would like.

You can see something interesting in this plot. The red pen staid in place for the first version of the second iteration. But in the second version its started to move after being stationary for a little while (see the blot of red ink). I don't think it had anything to do with soft paper or greater friction of the pen. Rather it had to do with the pen being attached more loosely. This meant it didn't have to bounce around, it had enough "flexibility" to counter the momentum. But in the end it gave in, and moved in small circles.

Mr. Wiggle is a grumpy looking bot but who wouldn't be when you have three thin marker legs that barely hold you up?
Mr. Wiggle worked well, I didn't have many issues creating him, however the biggest issue was getting the legs to stick properly, I only had clear sticky tape which wasn't effective but did hold together enough. Because the pens were thin and the tape was done poorly I found the positioning had to be perfect and most of the issues were adjusting the legs rather than the other components. Also a very grumpy bot because he didn't get any cool accessories as this house is lacking arts and crafts tools ... might need to invest so Mr. Wiggle can have a happy groove.

My wigglebot, Mr snowman was supposed to look cute but looking at him now he looks like a grumpy uncle who has probably had to much to drink at a Christmas party! I put all the parts together by using a glue gun. I realised one of the pens had a different height to the other two and kept falling over (serves him right for drinking too much!). I needed to put a weight underneath the cup to get the correct balance and it worked a charm. So here he is doing his grumpy wiggle!

My wigglebot became a bit sluggish by the end, I think in part due to over heating.

I didn't have too much trouble with construction, well, after I realised I didn't have to use all the bits we were posted!
To stick on the legs I used blutack, and then applied glue. The blutack was more to hold the legs in place while the glue dried.
I wired the circuit before I stuck it on, I struggled to keep the wires connected a little, very fiddly!
I initially had the battery pack between legs, but it just toppled over. It needed to be directly above a leg to support its weight. In turn the motor on top had to be pulled forward to counter the weight of the battery pack.
I added extra weight on top, which I later removed. The extra weight made the wigglebot too heavy to move. A little bit of weight on top, plus removing the peg made the wigglebot travel in a straight (slightly jumpy) line. So it was back to basics to try and achieve the circular pattern and keep the wigglebot on the page.

This is my first attempt to get my wiggle bot to balance and do its thing. As you can see it falls over after a second. I tried to take one of the legs off cause they weren't at the same height, but they were stuck on with a glue gun and it would have torn the cup. My husband suggested another solution, to put a weight under the cup to make it balance. I thought this would not work but it did, so kudos to him for suggesting it!

I had my 11 year old son (Talon) create the Wigglebot. It was interesting to watch him build/create the Wigglebot. The thought processes he went through and the trial and error. What I found most interesting though was his interest in the battery pack and motor. He played with those for quite some time, coming up with different uses for them.

Wigglebot - Experimenting with Friction, Force and Motion

I enjoyed creating this and making modifications throughout. I can see Wigglebot being a fantastic way to explore Forces and Motion with Primary students. The two versions I made produce very different visual results. I would love to have both versions to present to students. Presenting them with the open ended question: "If these Bots are built the same ... why is their artwork different?"

I really enjoyed making the wigglebot, however I did encounter a few problems. My wigglebot took three attempts to work properly. The first attempt the legs were not equally distributed on the cup and the wigglebot fell over all the time. The 2nd attempt legs were better proportioned but the battery was not strong enough to get it moving . The 3rd attempt I had to use a bit of ingenuity and change the battery casing to hold a 9v battery and it finally worked.

I finally had a trip to the city and bought the parts to create this and my lotus flower! I actually really enjoyed making the wigglebot. :
