He is 5 years old and has almost 6 months in our Head Start Program.He came with his mom, dad and sister from El Salvador as a refuge. He has lived in the United States for nearly one and a half years. They live with her aunt’s family and everybody speaks Spanish at home. He has 2 cousins that goes to elementary school that speak English and Spanish.During the last parent conference (2 months ago), his mom was worried because he is not speaking English, and stays at home playing. I suggested reading books in Spanish to have a routine with him, and going to the library where there is a good bilingual program with songs, puppet and activities to continue growing his vocabulary in Spanish.Since last conference I observed AD singing, dancing and speaking English in the school, and when he didn’t understand what his partner said, he asked the teacher.According to Language and Literacy Development Domain he is rated in Building Earlier stage and for the Responsiveness to Language he is rated Building Middle.He doesn’t show interest for literacy, so I asked his mom to have a routine of reading a book every day for at least 10 minutes, and I’m sending home a bag with 4 books (2 in English and 2 in Spanish from raising a reader program) every week.We use a lot of visuals, songs and music. She agrees that is important to help children to develop and maintain their home language.


She expresses that Head Start, through the Family Advocate helps families with their interests, goals or necessities. Also she suggests that a future to improve Head Start program is necessary to make a connection of the information between the Family Advocate with teachers and the classroom.
