You can use subscriptions to address diversity in your classroom to integrate cultures and perspectives that aren't always present in the curriculum or resources we have in our classrooms. Seeing perspectives, people, and cultures that represent yourself is an important component that can be missing from some classrooms or curriculums. The resources listed here are great to help support expanding the resources we include!

With this ability, we can purposefully subscribe to channels that feature a variety of cultures and abilities and ages. We have to act with intention when we choose videos and try to choose videos that reflect the diversity in our own classrooms. If I subscribe to math videos by mostly white males, my students might internally take that to mean being a white male is a prerequisite for being successful at math.

This is one of my favorite Ted Talks that I show to my students and my colleagues. I love it because it shows how there are different versions of the English language, which are all effective ways to communicate. I teach a sheltered language economics class and I love to show this and discuss with students that they don't need to worry about how they are communicating, and that it doesn't need to be perfect. There are different definitions of what it means to be a perfect English speaker, I am more interested in what they are communicating. I want them to use language however they need to to communicate with other students and understand the material.

I can use subscriptions for channels that have read aloud books that are culturally diverse and inclusive books. For example Call Me Tree by Maya Christina Gonzalez https://youtu.be/5c2p5NzkrE0. Another way to celebrate diversity is by showing videos of different holiday traditions. These two things alone show that cultural differences are respected and valued in the classroom and thus inspire inclusiveness and acceptance. Diversity can also be demonstrated by showing videos of girls doing science, and offering other voices in history that are not the dominant culture. In my experience when there is inclusiveness and acceptance in a learning environment, students feel safe and flourish. Videos themselves help with diversity because it is a different way to teach and reaches all students equitably. They are good for all students. I subscribed to two videos for diversity and pasted the link and video below, though I don’t find them as powerful as Life of Privilege Explained in a $100 Race video.

https://youtu.be/e_Ne-J9oHTU

I have seen first hand in the preschool classroom the power of talking about our racial differences and especially similarities. Themes/studies such as "All About Me," that is often done at the beginning of the school year, opens up the door to discussions for the remainder of the school year. Preschool is able to provide a safe place for children to talk about the things they are noticing as many are in a group setting for the first time.

This video talks about how teachers have a responsibility to teach that other cultures exist and to have/show respect for those cultures. As our world becomes less and less isolated, thanks to technological advances, the responsibility within our classroom to foster inclusiveness will impact teaching. Using YouTube to help students (who might not have much exposure to other cultures) will definitely help spur discussions in respect for others.

I subscribed to Suckceed because it seems to be a series of videos about some rather dark/sad things that kids have to deal with. I could see using some of these videos to raise awareness for my middle-schoolers, and maybe help some of them see that the issues they are facing are not new, nor do they need to face them alone. So often kids think that they are the only one who ever had whatever problem it is they are facing, and knowing they are not the only one can really help. Sometimes, even in a very diverse school like where I teach, kids feel very alone based upon their ethnicity or background. Reminding kids (and teachers) to reach out can make such a big difference.

I was looking for a post on gender diversity in theatre but wasn't coming up with what I was specifically looking for in an educational setting. While I know this content is out there so to speak, I wasn't willing to dig through a lot of non-educational content to find it. We talk a lot about diversity in the theatre classroom for a variety of reasons. For example, the most recent issue was regarding our musical last year, The Music Man, where a scene depicts very ignorant anglo-saxons sexualizing and imitating Native Americans at their social gathering through costumes, song, and dance. While I understood the many points of view in this scene-- the white people not knowing what they were doing "because of the time period", the students who found this demoralizing to their culture and heritage, to the company that holds the rights to the show wanting to uphold the playwright's intentions, it is certainly a very complex issue. It is also not complex in this day and age. So, when looking up Diversity in Theatre this episode of a group of actors is what I found. I plan to delve into it more on this "break" from school that we have and digest it more and discover ways that I can use it in class.

After an incident on the playground the father blows up at his child "because he wants him to be normal." The father finally realizes that his son just like all have are own unique and special gifts and to accept it.

This video teaches us how to be careful who we judge. Sometimes, we just do not have enough information before we put labels on others. This video teaches us to "walk a mile in someone else's shoes" before we judge them. I know there are many versions of this video out there, but I like this one.

Why Having Teachers Of Color Is Crucial

A very basic but realistic view of the importance of hiring and retaining Teachers of Color to the success of Students of Color. Each of us are victims to the biases and stereotypes that we have been exposed an subconsciously measure our students by those beliefs that we have heard or from one or two limited interactions with individuals outside of our race. Often a student's performance and end of the year placement is inadvertently predetermined, whether good or bad, by the words or actions of other individuals in past or media exposure. The presence and involvement of more Teachers of Color helps to create a positive learning environment for the students. This includes comfort level, mentorship, and belief and expectations of the student and their families. Knowledge of cultural standards and expectations can often alleviate conflict and negative interaction with students, parents, and teachers.
Malcolm Davis

As a teacher of color, sometimes the only thing people want to talk about with me is race. So, I like to use this video to establish basic understanding. I have used in a class I teach, and it always sparks rich conversations. I love the Larry Ferlazzo channel. I think it offers multiple perspectives. It's important t understand that issues are more complex than a bumper sticker.
