Music as a whole has the ability to alter a listeners emotions and feelings at any given time. Music has so many different genres that each person has the ability to search and find the genre that best suits and helps them. Music can help a person to relate to something bigger which can help to find a sense of themselves.

For some people, music can be an outlet to let out their frustration and understand themselves better. Although there is very differed responses from person to person, I have personally found that music can be a perfect coping mechanism to deal with mental health and stress.

"Music that is soothing and relaxing can help students to beat stress or anxiety while studying" (Davis). Although soothing music can help many students, for others different types of music may help more. Music both in and out of study situations can help people to calm themselves down and ground themselves to the reality of the present.

On the other hand, some students find it to be more stressful when listening due to the multitasking that comes with listening to music while studying. The difficulty here is to find the right balance of when and what activities are best paired with music and others that might not work as well for listeners.

Some people who listen to music while studying find that the music distracts them and makes them overstimulated. Although this is not an issue for everybody, it is still important to note that it may not work for SOME people due to difficulties with multi tasking. "reading comprehension decreases when people listen to music with lyrics. Music also appears to be more distracting for people who are introverts than for people who are extroverts, perhaps because introverts are more easily overstimulated" (University of Wollongong Australia).

For those who have a hard time multi tasking, it is difficult for them to focus when listening to lyrics. The lyrics in music may lock in different parts of your brain than the work that you are doing does which in turn can be extremely overstimulating for some people.

On the other hand, the same music, if already known by the listener might be less distracting due to the fact that they already know and understand the words and are less likely to get distracted because they have it in their minds already.

Some music has positive messages that can help a listener to further themselves as people, but there is music that has negative messages and connotations which could be harmful to the brain due to the impact that music can have on one's mental health.

Music has the ability to motivate and influence one's work. If there is music on while doing a boring or mundane task, then the listener is more likely to get the boring task done because they have the push to get it done. "Background music may improve focus on a task by providing motivation and improving mood. During long study sessions, music can aid endurance" (Davis). The music can help to push and motivate listeners to get their tasks completed in a timely manner.
