a. Who were the first victims of Nazi extermination practices?

The first victims of Nazi extermination practices were individuals with physical and mental disabilities. The Nazi Party created a "Euthanasia Program" in which they systematically killed those in which they felt were "unworthy of life" due to their disability. Their reasoning was that these individuals with disabilities had nothing to offer society and were taking opportunity, money, and time away from other Germans.

b. Why did the Nazis eventually create exterminate camps?

After a few years of the mass murders via the "Euthanasia Program", the Nazis created extermination camps, killing centers that the Nazis used as an efficient way to achieve the "Final Solution". These extermination camps focused on the mass murder of the "unwanted" individuals throughout Germany, and later throughout the territory that they conquered. At the peak of the Holocaust, or the "Final Solution", some of these killing centers contained close to 100,000 people. One of the most popular ways of mass extermination in these camps was through gas chambers, a tactic that could murder 2,000 individuals at one time.

Source:

https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/gassing-operations

SJ

a) What were the names of the camps?
The five extermination camps (killing centers) are Chelmno, Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, and Auschwitz.

b) In what general area of Europe were they located? Why there?
The camps were all located in German-occupied Poland. They were located in Poland both because thats were most of the victims were, as well as the Nazi's believed in keeping Germany pure and pristine, not wanting to do these terrible things in their own country.

c) Who were the Sonderkommandos?
The Sonderkommandos were work units made up of German Nazi death camp prisoners. The work units were composed of Jewish prisoners, who were threatened and forced to aid with the disposal of gas chamber victims during the Holocaust.

d) What is Zyklon B? What was it used for prior to the Holocaust?
Zyklon B is an hydrogen cyanide absorbed on or released from a carrier in the form of small tablets. During the Holocaust, it was used by the Nazi's for killing concentration-camp prisoners. Previously, Zyklon B was used to kill rodents- it came in pellets and was turned into gas for exterminating.

e) What happened to the personal belongings of the victims?
Victims were forced to hand over all their belongings. The inmates' belongings were packed and shipped to Germany to be distributed to civilians and or to be used by German industry.

How did the Nazis identify those in the camps? While not used in all camps, some identified prisoners with identification tattoos. A more common form of identification is the usage of emblems and colors. For example, Jews would be required to wear a Star of David badge.

Who did the Nazis imprison in these different camps? (Who were the victims?)
People who displayed behavior that deviated from the Nazi norms were prime targets for imprisonment. For example, people who carried differing political ideals (German Communists, Socialists, Social Democrats) as well as traditionally different groups and cultures (Gypsies and homosexuals), and those associated with non-constraining religious groups like Jehovah's Witnesses and Jews.

How many people were imprisoned overall? (Can we ever know for sure?)
We can never be 100% sure of how many people were imprisoned, but an estimated 1.65 million people were kept in the camps.

How many camps existed overall?
Including ghettos, Nazi Germany created more than 44,000 camps and other containment sites.
