Tennessee, lead by Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, was a Union army. Vicksburg, lead by Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton, was a Confederate army. After previous attempts by the Union to take control of the river fortress of Vicksburg, Mississippi, finally, Grant conducted an attack that would set the pace for the wrest of Vicksburg. The army landed at Bruinsburg, Mississippi and pushed Pemberton's forces back towards Jackson. With their opposing forces weakened, this gave them the opportunity to turn around and focus on Vicksburg. Grant made a smart decision of conducting a siege to prevent anymore bloodshed, considering Pemberton's army was in bad shape.
