         <description><![CDATA[<p>Gaul chieftain killing himself and his wife, marble copy, 2.11&nbsp;m (83&nbsp;in), National Roman Museum</p><p><br></p><p>This is  a statue from ancient Rome that shows a Gallic man holding up his wife's dead body while slicing a sword into his breast. This sculpture is a marble replica of a Greek bronze original that is now extinct. Today, the Palazzo Altemps in Rome is home to the Ludovisi Gaul. The Ludovisi Gaul statue represents the vanquished, which is unusual for its era because it usually shows the victor.</p>]]></description>

Given to the Cathedral of Essen in 980 by Abbess Matilda, the grand-daughter of Otto I, the Virgin of Essen (fig. 10.36) was most likely intended as a reliquary, however it is difficult to say for sure because the original wooden core of the sculpture has not survived.</p><p><br/></p><p>I always love virgin madonna portraits or in this case sculptures. It shows Virgin Mary in a different light than what we're used to. </p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p>]]></description>
