Araminta Ross was born in Dorchester County, Maryland and is the daughter of Harriet Green Ross and Ben Ross. She grew up as a slave cleaning the house her owners lived until one day at the age of 13 her owner was furious at Araminta and he hurled a lead weight at her and suffered a head injury that almost killed her.

Once Araminta Ross became an adult she fell in love with a man named John Tubman and when they got married she changed her name to Harriet Tubman. Later after when her slave owner died she escaped because she was supposed to be sold for $100 in her capture.

Harriet vowing to help let her family become free she was determined to help them escape so she went back to help them. She made 13 trips back to Maryland and she helped about 70 other slaves make their way out of the plantation.

At this time free slaves from the North could be captured and be enslaved so when Harriet Tubman was helping other slaves escape she had to lead them farther north so they wouldn't get recaptured. She also met other fellow abolitionists who helped her spread out the word to end slavery.

During the Civil War Harriet Tubman served as a spy scout, nurse, and a cook. In 1862 she was sent to South Carolina to help the soldiers there. She was also spying behind the Confederate Lines.
