Like the defunct clock which has lost its ability to tell time, Gatsby has lost his capacity for processing time and with it has become stuck in a state of dissatisfaction, endlessly waiting for her without acting. Now, however, he has knocked the clock away and with it, he's restarted his passage of time and begun interacting with Daisy again.

Gatsby is nervous, but still makes sure that Daisy perceives him as confident and relaxed through his body language. But his worried eyes give him away. Usually, Gatsby is able to appear as charismatic, but in the presence of Daisy he starts to break down.

This demonstrates that Gatsby's facade of wealth and confidence expands past the obvious markers of his lifestyle ex. his house and car. This need to become something that he authentically isn't is one that is ingrained deeply within his own personality and the way he carries himself. His relation to the defunct clock also demonstrates Gatsby's refusal to let go of the past.

although it has been implied that Gatsby and Daisy are still in love with each other, there is still a sense of tension because their memories are so far from the past
