Most people call me Charlotte but also known as Mum (and not just by my son).

I'm in my 3rd year studying accounting and finance and have also recently taken on a full time role as teacher at homeschool.

My biggest risk was giving up my career with a large public sector organisation as head of marketing for digital and global media to pursue a career in finance by returning to university while also having our forever home built at the same time. I'm still in the middle of it and not quite sure how I'll get through it at the moment however the things I thought would be an issue (making friends, feeling isolated, being old enough to be most of my cohorts Mum) actually weren't issues at all and have gone really well so I guess the lesson for me is to try to spend less time analysing the what ifs to free up energy to deal with the actual curveballs that come my way.

My name is Cara, and I guess I am the youngest in this course !

I am a third year Accounting and Finance student.

My biggest risk was leaving my home country, France and start my studies in the UK. I didn't even know what my course really meant when I first applied for it, consequently I was quite stressed !
However it all went well ! I made great friends that really supported me throughout my studies ! I learned that having people around me to help was a real privilege. I also learned that, even if I study, failure and disappointment happens, yet today I am very satisfied to have managed my way through 3rd year !

My name is Samiyah, and I'm a fourth year Accounting and Finance student.

The biggest risk I've probably taken is going to Canada for a year to study abroad. However, it didn't feel like too much of risk since I had taken steps to minimise potential issues that could arise, and prepared well.

The year ended up going really well, despite being cut short due to COVID. I met a lot of different people from different cultures, and got to be part of a new university, with different courses and teaching styles. I also got the opportunity to travel with friends before I left, which I had never done before, so overall, the risk was well worth taking.

My name is Ildina and I’m from Malaysia. I’m a 4th year Accounting and Finance student. Last year, I did my industrial placement in London.

My biggest risk was deciding to change my education pathway from wanting to do a science-related degree to pursuing an Accounting and Finance degree. Everyone in my family was in the healthcare sector and having studied pure-science in high school, it seemed like the best option. However, I was not enjoying my first few months doing Foundation in Science, so I decided to drop out halfway and start fresh in a new college. This was a big risk as I was unsure whether changing courses would work out best for me.

It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Studying finance during pre-university sparked my interest and I managed to secure a scholarship to support my studies in the UK. Fortunately, my family supported my decision as well and I have learned a lot throughout my 4 years living abroad. I’ve made great friends, met inspiring lecturers, and encountered brilliant individuals during my placement year. I learnt that in times of uncertainty, it’s really important to believe in yourself and do what’s best for you. Jumping into an uncertain decision may seem scary, but taking the first step is really all you need.
