The murder of Emmett, a young lovable boy, was felt all around the country by African Americans. The community was deeply affected and this made African Americans realize that they were under attack by the whites. -Melanie

Emmett Till was considered the spark that started The Civil Rights Movement because it was the first time that people saw how extreme the measures were. When taken into a biased court, it was clear that his death was the product of a hate crime that had no justification. The entire nation saw his story unfold and the public eye was wary of the dangers that discrimination and civil rights injustice caused.

Aurora Angeles.

Emmett Till was the spark of the Civil Rights movement because when you see what happened to him, many others thought that might happen to themselves. The people become more vocal about different topics after his death, they gave a voice to things that needed to be heard. Also, he was 14 years old, who was killed because of flirting with a white woman who was much older than him, like seriously. I personally think it was a mistake to kill the boy over something so small and rather focus on more important things back then.

Emmett Till was a touchstone for generations. His murder showed people that the problem is here, and it is happening now. The African-American community were devastate and astonished that people could do brutally kill a fourteen year old. It reminded them that no one was safe and that they needed to always fear for their life. That fear and resentment allowed for them to push forward into the Civil Rights Movement. A community of the oppressed chose to fight back. - Jennifer Baca
