Battle of Waterloo

In the battle of Waterloo 18th. June 1815, Napoleon`s army were beaten by the Anglo- allies and the Prussian army. Napoleon attacked with 72 000 men against the Anglo- allies(consisting of: The UK, Netherlands, Hanover, Brunswick and Nassau), but the French army couldn't break through the 68 000 soldiers. The breakthrough came when the Prussian army(Blücher) attacked Napoleons right flank with 45 000 men.

Armies
Three armies were involved in the battle: Napoleon`s Armèe du Nord, a multinational army under Wellington, and a Prussian army under Blücher. The french army of around 69 000 consisted of 48 000 infantry, 14 000 cavalry, and 7 000 artillery with 250 guns. Napoleon`s troops were mainly veterans with considerable experience and a fierce devotion to their Emperor. The French army was forced to march trough rain and black coal-dust mud to reach waterloo, and then to contend with mud and rain as they slept in the open. Nevertheless the veteran French soldiers were fiercely loyal to Napoleon.
Wellingtons army of 67 000 men, consisted of 50 000 infantry, 11 000 cavalry, and 6 000 artillery with 150 guns. Many of the troops in the Coalition armies were inexperienced, but there were big expectations from the 25 000 British soldiers since they had fought with the British army in Spain, and some of them had spent some of their time in the French army or in armies allied to the Napoleonic regime.
The Prussian army was in the throes of reorganisation. The soldiers were mostly untrained and unequipped when they arrived in Belgium. Its artillery was also reorganising and did not give its best performance - guns and equipment continued to arrive during and after the battle. Offsetting these handicaps, the Prussian army had excellente and professional leadership in its general staff. These officers came from four school developed for this purpose and thus worked to a common standard of training.

Consequences of Waterloo

The 19th century is Britain`s century. Waterloo finishes any hopes of France^s rivaling Britain as the dominant power in the world. That is what they were actually fighting over.
The unforseen consequence is the American Revolution. The French are Americas strongest allies. The largest army at Yorktown was the French army. They see that as a huge victory for France. In 1976, at the Bicentennial, they issued a stamp showing a bare-breasted Marianne hacking down a British lion. At her feet is a tiny baby wearing a sash. On the sash it says, Les Etats Unis(The United States)
