Besides, I learnt how to differentiate accurately between the extraction and isolation, the instruments that needed to identify the structure of the compound, which are FTIR, NMR, UV and metabolism. Metabolism is a biochemical reaction which mainly for the plants' growth, development and response to the survival condition. There are two types of metabolism, anabolism and catabolism. Anabolism requires energy to get a big molecules from small compound, whereas catabolism release the energy by breaking the big molecules to small one. There are two pathways for metabolism which are primary metabolism and secondary metabolism. Primary metabolites are a must for plant, for examples, lipid, carbohydrates, and protein. Secondary metabolites give the speciality to the plants, for examples, falvonoids, alkaloids and therpenoids. Secondary metabolites is waited to let the scientist to discover more as it is benefit to our human after extracted and isolated. This subject is very interesting because we can learn from our daily life.

Every chemical compound has its own importance use which we extract from living organism. And then there is some proses that take part in natural product which are isolation, quantification and others. Besides, in plant, there are 2 metabolism which produce primary metabolites and secondary metabolites. Every plant has primary metabolism whish is necessary for their gwoth. While every plant does not have same secondary metabolism as it is not directly involve in the plant growth, but it brings special funtion to the plant such as antioxidant.

Phytochemicals are divided into two main classes, which are primary metabolites (e.g. lipids, carbohydrate, proteins) and secondary metabolites (e.g. phenolic compounds, terpenoids, alkaloids). Primary metabolites are in control for the development and growth of plants while secondary metabolites that consists of a number of subclasses possessing several bioactivities, for instance anticancer and antioxidant. Secondary metabolites are not significant for the reproduction and growth of plants but they play an important role in food industries and pharmaceutical.

WONG KEH LI For my understanding, natural product can be obtained from living organism like plant, animal(marine) and microorganisms. In this class, phytochemistry and chemical synthesis (eg: modification of carbonyl compound) will be focused. The metabolism in a tree (plant) can be divided into anabolism and catabolism. The products formed known as metabolite. Primary metabolite (carbonate, protein, lipid) must be present in all plant as it involve growth, development, and reproduction whereas secondary metabolite (terpenoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics) not necessary present in plant due to its ecological function.

Basically NP is chemical compound that extracted or isolated from living organism such as plants, animals and microorganisms etc. Today i learn that from natural product study we can know the benefits inside the plants for example and why we used the plant in many field such as in cosmetic and pharmaceutical. In this course we focussed on phytochemistry which are chemicals derived from plants. In this class , i can differentiate between extraction and isolation. Extraction we take out all the compound in the plant using a solvent while isolation is from the extraction we want to take out only one pure compound specifically. In plant also there are metabolism occur. Which devide by two, primary metabolism and secondary metabolism. Primary metabolism directly involve in normal growth and reproduction. Secondary metabolism involve in ecological function. There are several secondary metabolism which are terpenoid, alkanoid, flavonoid and phenolics. When many terpenoid present in plant , it will makes the plant have fragrance while many alkaloid makes the plant have bitter taste because of the present of nitrogen in the alkaloid.

Most of natural products of course are derived from mostly plant with their secondary metabolites. Secondary metabolites are synthesied during the production of primary metabolites, which can be a product or an intermediates. These secondary metabolites are specific and vary from certain plants

Bcs of biosynthesis that's occur on the creatures itself, where the chemist can extract the bioactive compounds in it through, extraction then isolation, structure elucidation, and quantification. The npc produced differently depends on different pathways of its metabolites. The metabolites produced by metabolism process and differentiates by 2. Firstly is primary is take the biggest factor of living organism to be alive (involve in reproduction, development n growth) and the secondary is not directly involved on the 3 activity but it can be beneficial for the plant itself or the consumer (have ecological function)

Amelia K.Y

From today's NP 1st class lesson, I understand and learn that natural product is anything that is produced by life and includes biotic materials (woods, silk) and other natural materials that were able to found in living organisms (soil, coal). In addition, NP are often divide into 2 major classes: primary and secondary metabolites. Primary metabolites are organic molecules thst have an intrinsic function that is essential to the survival of the organism that produces them (the organism would die without these metabolites). For example, core building block molecules(amino acids, sugars and fatty acids) required to make the major macromolecules (DNA,RNA,proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) responsible for sustaining life. Secondary metabolites in contrast are organic molecules that typically have an intrinsic function that mainly affects other organism outside of the producer.

From today's lesson, I know that natural products is the products that come from living organism which mostly are plants. I realized that primary metabolites which is compulsory factor for the plant to grow and secondary metabolites is the alternative factor that present in some specific plants only. Through the lesson, I know the difference between extraction and isolation. Extraction is to remove the desired compound from origin whereas isolation is to purify the extracted compound.

In today class, I found out that this subject is related chemistry inside the living things. Natural product is the chemical compound or substances isolated from living organisms (including their biosynthesis, extraction, isolation, structural elucidation, quantification, physical and chemicals and reactions). Dr Norazah also mention about how she use the natural products such as cinnamon, aloe vera and others as the natural product to remove the pimples from her face a long time ago. I also use the same ways because when I was in school, my face is so oily and full of pimples. So I use these natural products mention as advised by my mother to reduce my face's problems. This shown that the natural product enough to improve ourselves without use of the harmful chemicals products. I also know from today's class that the fragrance plant such as lemongrass have many terpenoid in it, bitter taste plant such as bitter gourd is due to many alkaloid in it and the plants and fruits that contain antioxidant are due to many flavonoid in it. There are many more to learn in the next classes. My hope is to fully understand the subject and enjoy learning with the guide from Dr Norazah and score the highest grade possible for this subject.

Natural product include biosynthesis, extraction, isolation, structural elucidation and quantification. Natural products can divide into primary or secondary metabolism. Every organisms require primary metabolism for growth, development and reproduction while secondary metabolism is not necessary for growth and development. Every organism may have different secondary metabolism. Besides, I also learnt on the differences between separation and isolation. In conclusion, I like to learnt on this class since it is very interesting and our beloved lecturer is very dedicated in teaching every single point and explain more example on each point.
